Affiliated with gang but murder not gang related

Jamal Neal

As we reported in Monday’s newscast, twenty-one year old Jamal Neal was executed in one of the City’s most dangerous neighborhoods. Just after six o’clock on Monday evening, shots rang out on Banak Street; as many eight rounds were fired. Neal had just left his house after placing a routine call to his mother when two gunmen rode up and opened fire on him. By the time his mother got to the hospital, he was dead. The family believes that while Neal was associated with a gang, his murder was not related.  News Five Isani Cayetano went back to Banak Street today and has this report.

The establishment of a mobile communications center, less than twenty-four hours after the fatal shooting of twenty-one year old Jamal Neal, is part of the Belize Police Department’s immediate response to the mounting crime situation near Banak Street.  The trailer sits within proximity of Neal’s residence which is less than a stone’s throw away from where he was viciously executed on Monday evening.  Jim’s, as he was affectionately known to his adopted parent, had just ended a phone conversation with his biological mother.

Voice of: Marianita Neal, Mother of Deceased

“Jamal contacts me every, every morning, every afternoon, every evening.  He checks, “Mom are you at work?”  I answered him.  Later on he would check, “Mom are you at home as yet?” and I answered him.  That’s the last time I heard from Jamal, nineteen minutes to six [o’clock] when he called and said, “How far are you from home?”  I said, “Jamal, not far away.”

Upon hanging up, Neal proceeded along the said street when a pair of gunmen emerged on a black and red Meilun motorcycle.  A volley of shots, as many as eight-nine millimeter rounds, was fired in his direction hitting him to various parts of the body.

“While I was walking home, maybe about a few yards away from my home, I got a call and said that Jamal was shot.  All I did, I called my sister and I told my sister Jamal was shot, “I’m going to the hospital, do you want to go?” and she said yes.  We went to the hospital [and] when I got there, he was already dead.”

The murder, despite his direct affiliation with the Ghost Town Crips, is believed to be reprisal for a longstanding personal fall-out.  His kinship with the Meighan brothers, particularly Ellis Jr., with whom he resided on Banak Street, may have also been a factor in the deadly outcome.

“As a parent, were you ever concerned of the fact that he was living in a known gang neighborhood.  Did that ever cross your mind as a mother that says, “Yo, Jamal you need to either move or find new friends or be careful how you’re coming in and out of the Banak Street area?”

Voice of: Marianita Neal

“Alright Isani, I want to ask one question; which area is not a hot area, which area?  That’s all I can say, which area is not a hot area?  It doesn’t matter where you live, if di young man dehn wahn cohn cohn shoot dehn wahn shoot, soh ih noh matta weh you live.”

Isani Cayetano

“Ironically, the getaway vehicle, a motorcycle, in this case, was found not too far from where you live.  This was a little bit after seven o’clock last night, police were processing the area between Fern Lane and Jasmine Street and you live on Croton Lane.  What was your reaction knowing that this motorcycle was literally right in your back yard?”

Voice of: Marianita Neal

“Nothing, I didn’t feel any way.  All I said was, “Who did it the good Lord knows.” and that’s it.  I have to bury my son and that’s what I’ll do.”

While preparations are underway to have Neal laid to rest, police have since increased their presence in the area to monitor the situation and to possibly thwart any retaliation from this latest homicide. Reporting for News Five, I am Isani Cayetano.

Up to news time, there have been no arrest in this latest homicide.

Instead of asking this mother all those stupid questions why don’t you go ask the pm and this useless corrupt impotent gov. When they are going to stop the senseless slaughter of thousands of belizeans who are now dead go ask judas barrow why he and his gov. Are so impotent on crime.
