Gender Policy Protest hits Cayo in thousands

The pro-constitution movement has been making its rounds of Belize. It touched down in the twin towns of Santa Elena and San Ignacio this morning and there is every indication that the campaign is picking up momentum. On Friday, conservative estimates put the numbers at a similar march in Toledo at three thousand. And today, we figure there was almost the same. With all the atmosphere of a street march complete with live band leading the way, they came out in the thousands in the Cayo District. Mike Rudon was there and has the story.

If politicians could figure out a way to bottle whatever it was which got this crowd going, they would. Today was a work day, but that didn’t stop Belizeans of all ages and races from marching through San Ignacio and Santa Elena. They danced behind bands and music boxes, held placards and chanted. The energy was unmistakable and the emotion sincere. These are people who are serious about their God and serious about taking a stance against the homosexual agenda.

Scott Stirm, Pastor

Scott Stirm

“The purpose of it is to stand on top of the words in our Constitution which invokes the supremacy of God and that there can only be true freedom in the embracing of moral and spiritual values. That’s what it’s all about. It’s not a protest, it’s a stance. It’s positive and proactive and standing on top of the words of our Constitution and all these people are saying that’s what we want for Belize.”

Even the Mennonites came out today in numbers, which was notable. Their message was less complicated than the gender policy. For them it is about God and family – end of story.

“The message that we want to send today is simply that our God is supreme. That anytime in history whether it’s biblical history or natural history. When you read where nation’s governing systems or people turn away from the moral structure that God has determined for them that there was a fall or a demise in their culture, in their finances. Many times depression followed. We’re not really here to protest anything. We’re just here to declare the glory of God for the benefit and the blessing that falls upon those who glorify god and live for his name.”

Wilmer Kornelsen, Spanish Lookout

“I have a big construction work and I am the owner and I left it there because I feel that this is more important because we believe in family and the family wants it all in one union so we need to stick up for it. We want our children to be with their parents and to have a man marry a woman and that’s what we believe and that’s why we came out. We need to get out what it right.”

“I believe the gender policy is in direct conflict with what God’s design is…YES. Now like I said we’re not here to protest. We’re here to say there is a better way. Come join the better way.”

Terry Young, Cayo Resident

“We have to show support. We have to be out here so that the entire country of Belize sees that Cayo is not with the UNIBAM. We serve one God and the God that we serve, that’s why we are here. Just fu see what happened this morning, to know that we have a strong message. We are not with UNIBAM. We are not with Orozco. We are with God.”

Terry Young

Whether it is standing for family values and God or standing against UNIBAM, there is undoubtedly much common ground. But Pastor Scott Stirm says that the common ground definitely has no room for hate or homophobia. He says if that’s the feeling out there, then there’s a misunderstanding.

Scott Stirm

“Maybe people misunderstand or they’re seeing things through different filters or whatever. But all I’m saying is that this is a positive, proactive demonstration of people and of values and what the people of Belize want. We’ve been saying this for the last couple years. The overwhelming majority of people in Belize don’t want the homosexual agenda to be legitimized in our nation. It’s not about hate; it’s not about disenfranchising anybody. It’s all about guarding family values, about guarding morality and about guarding the values of our constitution.”

The march through the streets of San Ignacio and Santa Elena lasted two hours and ended with the usual fire and brimstone rally. Mike Rudon for News Five.

The pro-constitution movement will head to Dangriga on Saturday.

My take is that energies (human/financial resources) from both side – UNIBAM & Belize Action – ought to be devoted to more pressing issues.

It is Biblical that first remove a thing In your eyes before looking to another person’s eye. are you a sinner, be careful because the same measure will be used on you. because where a homosexual goes also you sinner will end up. all sins are equal.
