Chop wound to the head kills man in Silk Grass

In the south, two persons were killed over the weekend and though the murders were unrelated, there are striking similarities. Both happened in the south of Belize, both were done with sharp instruments, both happened during altercations in which alcohol was involved and in both cases, the person Police believe is responsible has been apprehended and is in custody. The first happened on Friday evening before six p.m. in the community of Silk Grass on the Southern Highway. Mike Rudon travelled south today and has the story.

Mike Rudon, Reporting

Thirty-nine year old Blas Alvarado, seen here lying in a pool of his own blood, was viciously chopped in his head by a man Police say the Honduran national from Silk Grass was drinking with all day. The two men were sitting here in front of this building when the fight allegedly broke out. One person we spoke to today told us it was exactly five forty-five when she looked out and saw Alvarado on the ground.

Voice of: Eyewitness

“When I peep outside, I called two other friends. When we bend over and see wah man di lay down draining ina blood. Then we get up and we run out. at the same time dehn mi have wah baby weh see weh happen and he goen call his parents. So the place mi get crowded. Everybody weh mi deh dah the Chinese mu deh dah the section. When I come I neva notice who dah mi di man yo dig. I just watch the man and dah mi drains a blood. After a while a lotta people come, take picture and ask weh part di man deh weh chop. People say ih run soh. Dehn mi got some people weh mi deh ina di house come out and say oh ih noh dead yet; ih still di breathe. At the same time, the place get crowded and nobody neva know weh fi do. I walked backwards, call 911 and at the same time I ask for an ambulance and they said okay. They neva ask fi no details, dehn just heng up. So I call two three times more and nobody neva ansa; no ambulance neva reach. Wah green pickup mi reach at the same time. Probably three minutes afterwards, dehn decide to pick up the man and ker ahn to the hospital.”

Wilfredo Ferrufino

Sgt. Wilfredo Ferrufino, CIB, Dangriga

“Dangriga Police were called to the trauma room in the Southern Regional Hospital. There they observed one Blas Alvarado suffering from multiple chop wounds to the head. He was in a critical condition and taken to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital where he died while undergoing treatment there.”

Investigating Officer Wilfredo Ferrufino says that from what they have been able to find out, it was a minor misunderstanding which ended up with Honduran national Lydio Mendez taking his drinking partner’s life.

Sgt. Wilfredo Ferrufino

“The deceased and one Lydio Mendez were in an altercation and Mister Mendez pulled out a machete and inflicted the chop wounds to Mister Alvarado.”

Mike Rudon

“Have you been able to come up with any motive for what happened? What they were fighting over?”

Sgt. Wilfredo Ferrufino

“At this point, the investigation has indicated that it is was a simply misunderstanding and that is all that it has shown so far.”

Voice of: Eyewitness

“It was from the bottom of his left eye reaching through the back to his right ears.”

Mike Rudon

“You mi kinda close to him…was he breathing? Was he saying anything?”

Voice of: Eyewitness

“I neva did talk to the man. I mi know the man, but I ‘fraid to go close to ahn and talk to ahn. So at the same ih mi di breathe, ih stop breathe and then seconds afterwards, ih di catch up back to ih breath. So when ih mi look like ih stop breathe, the same young man weh mi holla fi me mek I mi come help when the incident mi happen, he gone and touch ahn pan ih cheeks. I actually mi think dah mi only one lee cut. But when he touch ahn on ih cheeks, I see the whole cut from the bottom of the eye to the back of the head open up.”

The story on the scene was bizarre, with claims that Lydio Montes had actually been stabbed first, then invited by Alvarado to kill him. Ferrufino would confirm only that Montes was wounded when he was apprehended, but would release no more details.

Voice of: Eyewitness

“The man weh get chop in his head, stab him first with the knife and then they say, he said when he saw the blood coming out, he told the man kill me cause ih noh wah go dah jail. So dehn say the man grab the man and slam ahn into the window, give ahn the machete and slice ahn.”

Sgt. Wilfredo Ferrufino

“We do have video of what occurred, but at this time, I don’t want to go into details as it relates to that. I don’t want to jeopardize the investigation and go into details.”

Lydio Montes has been treated for his injuries and is in Police custody. Sgt. Ferrufino says that he has been interviewed and the file has been forwarded to the D.P.P. for her advice on charges. Mike Rudon for News Five.
