James Adderley with the power ball on Sports Monday

Good evening, I am James Adderley and this is Sports Monday.

The CONCACAF Gold Cup 2013 opened yesterday inside the United States and the two big teams in Group A were simply jolted in their first appearance. Canada opened against Martinique, a small Caribbean nation and it was this strike from outside the 18 by Fabrice Reuperme that gave Martinique a 1-nil big W over the Canadian National team. Meanwhile the biggest shocker came in the Mexico-Panama encounter in Group A at the 7th minute Panama’s Quentiero is taken down inside the 18 by Mexico’s Jimenez for which the referee rules penalty. Gabriel Torres steps up for Panama and he gives his team an early 1-zip lead.

We’re now into extra time to close out 1st half play when, Marco Fabian de la Mora times this pass perfectly and he ties the ballgame for Mexico at 1 apiece. Three minutes into the 2nd half Quenntero finds Gabriel Torres with this wonderful pass who beats the Mexican keeper to make it a 2-1 lead that would hold up to the long whistle.

This brings us to our National Team who will face the United States at 9 P.M. tomorrow Tuesday 9th July. Folks our team took a few body blows before going in. 1st there was an upheaval over money’s owed to the players from the Copa Americana at Costa Rica and they wanted some before catching the plane. Then Assistant Coach Charlie Slusher was disciplined and struck off the travelling list for breaking protocol according to the F.F.B. Finally Elroy Kuylen was unceremoniously asked to return home from Houston by U.S. immigration after his passport numbers indicated that he had over-stayed his allotted time in the U.S. on a previous visit. This is no time to ponder the right and wrongs of these unfortunate events. It’s time to rally round the flag. Tomorrow Belize faces the host country, the U.S., which will set the tone for our very first participation in the Gold Cup. We’re asking a lot from our team so let’s give them maximum support. Join Channel 5’s coverage tomorrow at 8:30 P.M.

Turning to the local scene, the Belize District Volleyball Tournament blasted off on Saturday at the B.E.S. Auditorium and we pick up the action in the opening set as Moen Stars jump out quickly to a 13-17 lead over Lady Warriors. Lady Warriors would only score 1 more point in this set as the Stars were simply in top form. Watch Emma Hoare set table for Shelmadine Cacho whose smash pushes the lead to 22-8. The end of the 1st set comes when Sherlene Johnson fails to get this back over the net as Moen Stars take the set 25-8. In the next set a more determined Lady Warriors shows up and it starts with this nice play from Viviana Goff to Sherlene Johnson who finds Barabara Cadle and she places it perfectly to come up with the point. It’s more Lady Warriors when they display their improved defensive stand and it pays off when Jasmine Anderson pushes their ball long and the return from Shanaye Casimiro is too high for Krystal Bevan and too low to make it over the net. Down 15 to 6 the Warriors go on an 11 to 2 run. Sherika Burton of the Stars looks for the point here but Shamira Usher saves to Crystal Jones who gets it to Jasmine Anderson which forces the Stars to concede the points and we’re tied at 17 apiece. The score is 24-22 in favor of the Stars when Shelmadine Cacho’s well planned floater eludes the diving Esther Middleton as Moen Stars take the 2nd set 25-22. In set 3 again Lady Warriors must come from behind and Jasmine Anderson’s touch is perfect to pick up the point to make it a 22-21 score. It’s 24-21 when Jasmine Anderson and Crystal Jones combine on this return. The play is then kept alive top Jones who makes it a 24-22 score. Lady Warriors now needs this point to stay alive after a rather long rally but the attempted smash by Kim Spencer winds up long as Moen Stars sweep the match 25-8, 25-22, and 25-22.

In other results from Saturday’s Interoffice play Scotia Bank ruled over Simon Quan 25-23, 15-25, 15-8 and B.E.L. jolted First Caribbean Bank 25-16 25-21 while in the male nightcap, Scorpions stung Simon Quan Dragons 23-25, 25-17, 25-19, 29-27. Yesterday Moen Stars easily handled U-16 females 25-7, 25-10, 20-25 and 33-31.

Turning to the basketball scene, the championship tings were on display Friday night at Bird’s Isle as the defending champion took a 2 game lead in 3 of a best of 5 series against No Limit. With its back against the wall No Limit roared out of the standing blocks as Leslie Jacob grabs possession off a misplay by Tyron Edwards and goes all the way for 2 of his 19 game points. Brandon Rogers was also fire – watch him receive this long pass from Kurt Burgess and stays with it to sink the bucket for 2 of his team high 21 points to go along with his 11 rebounds. Kurt Burgess was also focused on avoiding the sweep as he erupted for 20 points and struck for the game high of 12 boards. No Limit was up by as much as 10 points in the 1st quarter but only up 25-21 when the quarter concluded.

In the 2nd, Winston Pratt takes on 2 defenders to give Tuff E Nuff a 31-30 lead and Pratt would put up 10 points tonight. With no one boxing him out Faron Lauriano stays with this play for the put back he would finish with the game high of 25 points after shooting 71% from the field and 83% from the free throw line. Of course Tyron Edwards will put up numbers and here he starts for 2 of his 20 game points to give his team a 2 point lead. He then lands this long triple as Tuff E Nuff tries to pull away. If Tyron can do it then so can Ashton Edwards as he knocks down the 3 pointer at the half Tuff E Nuff leads 48 to 45. Immediately into the 3rd Pratt deals to Lauriano and the left hand finish works. Gregg Rudon tries to keep No Limit in the hunt so he penetrated to finish off the glass with the left hand. Rudon would put up 14 points. Leslie Jacobs looks good with this floater as the No Limit offense begin to splutter. It begins to look like a rout when Jamal Kelly sets up Lauriano who hammers it home. Tuff E Nuff goes on to post the 91-80 big W and complete the sweep to make it two I.B.L. titles in a row and we say congratulations.
