Burn victim responds to voice of wife

Dwayne Flowers

Dwayne Flowers is a well known Placencia resident who was seriously injured on Wednesday afternoon. Flowers was at a home that was recently sold, and while inspecting a gas tank, it exploded causing burns to ninety percent of his body. Friends and family members on the Peninsula have rushed and put their credit cards on the line for the burn victim who is also a newlywed. His wife, Cindy, joined him Thursday on an air ambulance that took them to a burn center in Georgia. Flowers is responding to his wife’s voice and according to Jacki Tipton, a friend on the Peninsula, the fundraising effort continues.

“The airport transfer went perfectly. They reached Augusta, Georgia about ten p.m. last night. And then because of everyone’s amazing assistance and then this morning….because I am so excited, this morning Dwayne was actually conscious because they induced the coma—as they do with burn victims. So he was conscious and he has a feeding tube. He can’t speak as yet, but he’s turning his head towards his wife’s voice. We are so excited. We really feel he is going to have a full recovery. It costs so much money because it is for three months. He will most likely be in the hospital for two to three months.”

“How are the donations coming along? I know that you have a very big bill to cover.”

“The donations are going well. Of course we can always use more, but we are…some donations are going into the burn victim funds. I understand that we have a bit more than half that we need to pay for the plane because you know the plane was forty-five thousand Belize, the medical plane. And there were a few of us who had guaranteed the payment. So we were fortunate that they accepted that from us and now we are getting the funds for that. And then any leftover money that is donated into that burn fund will go to future burn victims. And then we have monies coming in to cover the Belize bill, which is the Belize medical bill…things like that into another account. And then we have people in the U.S. contributing to a U.S. account for Cindy because obviously she has to be with her husband, Dwayne Flowers, in the U.S. and we don’t want her to be worried about her cost of living and everything. So we are really trying to make sure that they are taken care of for the next three or so months so that they can get a good start.”

There is a fundraising effort for Flowers that is scheduled for July thirteenth at Jaguar Lanes in Placencia.
