Calls for help as Placencia resident flown out of country for burn injuries

A Placencia electrician is tonight fighting for his life at the Belize Medical Associates. Dwayne Flowers, who is unquestionably a well liked resident in the peninsula, was seriously injured in a gas explosion as he worked on a leaking tank. His wife of three months told News Five’s Jose Sanchez that Flowers needs to get urgent medical treatment in the United States. While the community is rallying behind him, his family is making an urgent appeal for assistance to save his life.

Jose Sanchez, Reporting

Twenty-eight year old Dwayne Flowers, pictured here in Willows Bank and on the seas with the love of his life was living the Belizean dream. Placencia’s well known and loved electrician was hired to fix a gas tank at a house which was just off the housing market, and it exploded and severely burned Flowers. That was on Wednesday afternoon. He was immediately transported to the Belize Medical Associates for treatment. Outside the hospital was Cindy, a Dallas native who moved to Belize two years ago and got married to Dwayne earlier this year.

“We just recently married February twenty-first so we’re newlyweds. He does electrical and plumbing work around Placencia and I stay home.”

Jose Sanchez

“I know it is difficult, but can you tell me what actually happened?”

Cindy Flowers

“I’m not too sure, but from what I understand is he was in a closed space checking out a leak from a butane and there was when there was an explosion, fire.”

Jose Sanchez

“The doctors… hHow bad are the burns? What did they say?”

Cindy Flowers

“Second and third degree. Initially they thought it was seventy percent, but now it is ninety percent after they did the cleaning.”

Jose Sanchez

“I know this is very hard, but I understand your husband is particularly well loved in the community. What are the plans? Where does he need to go to get some treatment?”

Cindy Flowers

“The doctors here have recommended that he goes to the states for long term to a burn center. So we have arranged for him to go to Augusta, Georgia.”

Friends and relatives have come from the peninsula to Belize City urging others for help.

Dion McFadzean, Uncle of Burn Victim

“I’m not here all the time. I met him quite often on holiday in Placencia and we had a great time over the weekend. And to see such a lovely young man; that something tragic like this could happen to him, he needs all the help in the world.”

Jacki Tipton, Resident, Placencia

“Well I know Dwayne for eight years and he always helps everyone; always. And so we are looking for this money; we need a lot of money donated and it is through the Burn Victim Mercy Fund with Belize Bank. The account number is 695-115-2111. Please. And if anyone want to contact me directly, they could on my email casaplacencia@live.com .”

Jose Sanchez

“I know some people have already put some expenses forward. This is very fast. How were you able to get the air ambulance to come. I know there are still some monies…”

Jacki Tipton

“We had air ambulance as twenty-two thousand U.S dollars. And we had a very generous donor guarantee this…that’s how this happened. We had a generous donor guarantee it and then I guaranteed to pay it back. So I already collected sixteen hundred dollars right here in front of the hospital. And we have a pledge for nine thousand Belize dollars. So we are asking people to donate anything they can; especially people who know Dwayne and whom he has helped over the years.”

Cindy Flowers

“There are people putting their credit cards on the line that needs to be paid back. And so it is through them and through donations from the village, from the states, from friends of Dwayne’s, friends of mine. So it is donations plus credit.”

Jacki Tipton

“We have Dr. Jordan from Maya Beach who arranged all of this in the U.S. Everything has been covered in the U.S. at this hospital gratis. And we are so appreciative of this.”

The air ambulance arrives at four-thirty to take him to the J.L. Stills Burn Center in Augusta, Georgia. So with ample prayers, financial donation, good doctors and time, Flowers will stand a chance of survival. Reporting for News Five, Jose Sanchez.
