F.F.B. president says players’ concerns over money resolved

Earlier in the newscast, we reported on the suspension of Team Belize’s assistant coach on the eve of the Gold Cup. But there are bigger problems facing the team. Despite setting a target of half a million dollars which should have covered training leading up to the Gold Cup and participation in the games, fundraising has fallen short. In fact, only half that amount has been raised…that’s definitely not good news. News Five understands that players have become agitated about the money situation which led to some testy moments in Belmopan on Wednesday. Today F.F.B. President, Ruperto Vicente, told News Five what led to players threatening to boycott the friendly match scheduled for Wednesday afternoon, even as he says the situation is resolved, the players are in good spirits and they will reach their goal.

Ruperto Vicente, F.F.B. President

“The players were very concerned because they had wanted an agreement, a contract. I was reluctant to give them a contract not knowing how much money we were going to be raising. And there was no way I would give them a contract or promise them anything not knowing what I have. I will not go into that. I will not promise players anything if I know I cannot get it to them. But we managed to reach a compromise with the players and to assure them that what we had promised at this point we will get to them.”

Ruperto Vicente

“One media house reported that it got so far that the players threatened to not go to the Gold Cup. Can you confirm or deny that?”

Ruperto Vicente

“No the players did not threaten to not go to the Gold Cup. We had a game scheduled yesterday against a team from Melchor and they threatened not to play that game if we don’t come to an agreement with them.”

“But the Gold Cup…”

Ruperto Vicente

“The Gold Cup was never at risk…it was never at risk. The players are in a good mood, the players are ready for action. They’ve asked for a little bit more – rather than getting fifty dollars U.S. per day they’re going to be getting a stipend of seventy-five 75US per day. And at game time we’ve gone up from $200US per game to $US per game. And then if we move on to the second round of tournament, there’s additional money that is going to come to the federation as a result of qualifying to the second round. We’ve agreed with the players that we’ll give them fifty percent of that extra money once we qualify to the second round. We cannot sacrifice anything. We’ll have to find the monies and it is my responsibility to find the monies. Even if the federation has to take out a loan to get our players there, we’re going to do that. But I am not going to sacrifice anything. Our players deserve the best, and we’re going to give them the best.”

How sad is this Belizean are trying hard to raise the money for then to travel to the US and this guys want more money when they know that the money to pay the expenses for the US game has not reach its target. And Mr. Charlie Should be one example to them they are not supposed to be going out late at night they should be resting as much as they can at night and practice hard during the day. Is not that i no think they deserved some money but i this point in time there’s no money to give them Just be patient and play yours best for right now lest worry about getting there
    Good Luck Belize Team!!!!!!

Now we see silvano and alejandro are the same person!! Let me say that i was disappointed to hear the players threatening not to play cause they want more money. I really hate that, i thought they were first to prrove that they are good then the money will come. They have acted selfish and good thing they fired charlie since he was a bad influence. Greed kills all hopes.

Will someone explain the financial arrangement with team members. As I understand it, international teams are given room and board and out of pocket expenses. They are not paid a salary. Most of them are honored to be chosen to represent their countries. The difference in Belize, I assume, is that the players have no other source of income while international players are well paid by their professional individual contracts with professional teams. In Belize, “Cho!! you have to pay me to represent”. No money no deh. Is this about representing or money? The government, the people should subsidize the team, pay an extra dollar in tax for international representation..”.everybody di complain bout moni but nobody want drop one dala ina the hat.” Poor people suck.

I’m disappointed in the belizean government not having funds for the f.f.b. . I came to find out on national tv how they had to raise the money to participate in the gold cup . Also that their jerseys were donated. Shame on the belizean government situation being exposed like that.besides the drama it was history in making,as a belizean living in the us I could probably speak for a lot of us here we couldn’t wait to support our national team represent . Even we didn’t had the same outcome when they played Mexico a couple years ago it was good. But that’s a wake up call to our centra American neighbors that Belize have football talent even without the belizean government economical support . Proud belizean
