Media houses raise over $15,000 for football team

Marlon Kuylen

The Belize Jaguars is in its final preparations for football matches to be played against the national teams for the United States, Cuba and Costa Rica.  The three games will be played in Portland, Oregon; Salt Lake City, Utah and Hartford, Connecticut. The team leaves the country at the end of the week and it is still short about fifty thousand dollars. Over the weekend, generous donors and organizations committed hard earned dollars to see the country’s national selection financially fit for travel. Football Federation of Belize’s executive member, Marlon Kuylen told News Five that they received over fifteen thousand dollars today that should get them closer to the Gold Cup.

Marlon Kuylen, Executive Member, F.F.B.

“We are happy to note that alot of people are now coming on board. They see that we are getting close to our trip and that the funds are not coming in as we had hoped for. So we have some of the media like KREM sponsored a dance at Tropicana on Friday night and we got five thousand dollars from that venture. On Saturday, Wave had a thousand plate barbecue and that was sold out by four o’clock and today we got a check for ten thousand two hundred and fifty-eight dollars. And then we have other people calling in and individual people going to the back dropping in twenty-five dollars, fifteen dollars. Some companies have come forth giving us a thousand dollars, two thousand dollars here and there.”

Jose Sanchez

“With that fifteen thousand dollars from this weekend’s activities between Wave and Tropicana, how much does that put you on your bottom line?”

Marlon Kuylen

“Well with what we had promised the players, we would have needed around fifty thousand dollars more on Friday before we leave. But they are asking for a little bit more and I totally support it because they have been working hard; they deserve better. And so we would like to raise about fifteen thousand more. So I would say about sixty-five thousand more that is needed.”

Jose Sanchez

“Okay, so how much money do you have right now?”

Marlon Kuylen

“So far, we have raised about two hundred thousand dollars. The budget for Gold Cup—because there is a misconception out there; that the five hundred thousand dollars that we wanted to raise at the telethon was specifically for the Gold Cup. But no, it is for the whole national team program because we have women’s, we have under fifteen, an under sixteen tournament. So this was to take care of all the national teams. But the budget for the Gold Cup is two hundred thousand dollars.”

Jose Sanchez

“So we are about fifty to sixty thousand dollars short of that?”

Marlon Kuylen

“Yes because although we’ve raised around two hundred thousand, we were in the hole and we owe the players…in fact, we still owe them for the Costa Rica Trip. So that’s why about sixty-five thousand dollars more will do it for us.”

Jose Sanchez

“People woudla want to know, wasn’t there funding coming from FIFA, parent organization. What happened to those funds, if there were?”

Marlon Kuylen

“That’s for administration and that’s for development programs.”

Jose Sanchez

“The next fund raising event…I guess funds will be coming in from this also while you are gone, but when is it and what is it?”

Marlon Kuylen

“The next event, we are teaming up with the Belize City Council and we are having a concert this weekend with the major local artists: Tanya Carter, Sweet Pane, Chico Ramos and Bowen and Bowen is also contributing big time to this venture. And some of the ministers actually: Patrick Faber, John Saldivar, the Mayor like I mention, Minister Boots. They are all going to present us with some funding at this concert.”
