But F.F.B. believes G.O.B. can do more for National Team

Marlon Kuylen

Many believe that the government should do more to fund the country’s first national team to play in the Gold Cup. But last week, Minister of Sports, Herman Longsworth, indicated that the government has gone as far as it could to help the F.F.B. when he said, “We believe that it is the responsibility of the federations, of the community, the private sector to move sports at this level…that is not what we are here for – that is not the government’s responsibility. We are here to ensure that we impact on the majority of the population.” And Longsworth did point out that the government had given fifty thousand dollars to the Gold Cup initiative. F.F.B. Executive Member, Marlon Kuylen, says the organization still hopes that G.O.B. will do more.

“I know the ministry of sports does take care of stadiums all around the country. And yes through the sports council they have the different programs that they fund. But overall we think that government should be more involved. Yes we collected fifty thousand dollars from the Prime Minister. He has promised us that if the telethon didn’t do good, he would give us some more. But we would hope that like other countries, the government would do more for sports in general because this where you keep the young people off the streets…give them something positive to do; make a positive impact in their lives. It not just about sports and football. When you look at team Belize out there or any sport at all and the passion it generates in the public and the streets.”

“Sports unite people, a country. What is the message then to youths if the youths can say I want to be like Woodrow or other players in the team like Orio? What is the message to these youths if you become the best in your sport just to find out well, there is no government support; there is not enough being done? Shouldn’t there be more from the business and from the government?”

Marlon Kuylen

“Well yes. You know by not raising enough from at the telethon, I think it struck a chord. Yeah we didn’t get all the help we needed from corporate Belize, but little by little they are starting to come on board now. And we are hoping that they can see the difference or the significance that they can make in the future. Maybe we will struggle with this tournament with the Gold Cup and perhaps with the other tournaments that we are going to attend this year. But I’m hoping that there is a turnaround that this negative becomes a positive sometime in the very near future.”

“Are you reaching out to Belizean in the Diaspora—whether they are in the U.S. or UK, wherever they may be, international accounts perhaps?”

Marlon Kuylen

“Yes, we have, but I think we waited little too long. We haven’t been able to reach them as much as we would have hoped. Btu it is a learning experience for us too. We are new at this; we are only fifteen months into this federation. And so it is a learning experience for us too.”

Despite a bumpy road to the Gold Cup, the Belize Jaguars leave on Friday for the U.S.

It is very dissapointing to hear FFB make such excuses in their inability to raise funds; up to the present the Northern Districs have not seen any promotional item on sale and they were not asked to do any radiothons or whatever sales to raise funds for team Belize. It looks as if they want everything to be delivered on a silver plate; does the team reflect Belize as a country or only Belize City???

G.O.B have a hard time supporting economically the national team, my question is how about marketing ? You know how many belizean people in the us would support the selection team by purchasing jerseys and tees.I logged int concacafshop.com I could not find a belizean jersey just a couple of tees. But u can find about every other central american team, and I don’t hear this countries having problems supporting their team like Belize has. I don’t know how it works , but its frustrating as a belizean living in the us trying to support our national team representing us.
