2 suspended for baby mix up at Western Regional Hospital

Peter Allen

The K.H.M.H. is not the only hospital facing criticism. The Western Regional Hospital was also criticized following a body switching error. A twenty-three year old mother lost her newborn at the Western Regional Hospital over weekend. Following her surgery, the grieving mother found out that the body of new newborn was given to another family to bury. The Ministry of Health apologized for the procedural error by staff members of the hospital and in a release, expressed its sincerest apologies on behalf of the management and staff to the families involved and the public for the breach of confidence in the medical institution. This afternoon, C.E.O. in the Ministry of Health, Peter Allen, told the media that the ministry regrets the incident and Western Regional employees were placed on suspension following the incident.

Peter Allen, C.E.O., Ministry of Health

“The incident at the Western Regional Hospital to me was simply unforgiveable and so terribly sad and we do send out our heartfelt sympathies and our deepest regrets to the families affected. Now you’ll understand that the Western Regional Hospital is a public hospital and the K.H.M.H. is a statutory authority…so we have a little more direct control over what happens at the Western Regional Hospital. In that particular instance, we have immediately asked the Director of Health Services to conduct an investigation into the sequence of events that led to this terrible and unfortunate issue. And I am sure the Director of Health Services will be able to report on it as soon as it is finished which will be soon. But it appeared that there is some direct, some non-observance of protocols that could be directly attributed to one or two individuals. Now, without meaning to deny proper process to those individuals, I felt it important after consultation with my administrative officers at the ministry to listen to the recommendations of the Western Regional Hospital management team and to suspend one or two officers while we conduct the proper investigation into what really happened. That is what we have done. But the most important thing is that I wish I could say it never happened. But it did and we are extremely sort that it did.”

This is how the bureaucrats talk when they want to dodge responsibility. It’s a whole pile of horsesh*t.

“Oh, my hands are tied… we need to go through the statutory authority board… we need to apply in writing… oh, we need to follow a timely procedure… we need this…. and we need that…..”

What you need is your vehicle yanked and your salary cut in half and the other half given to you at the end of the fiscal year ONLY if your institution performs.

@jimmy. So you want Dr Allen to stand and hold every employees hand at every hospital and clinic every moment of every day? How about the staff (who incidentally get paid to do a job) actually perform the job they are meant to do.
The man has already taken action against the two responsible with a suspension. This is way faster than any other investigation into misdoings, Look at Noh More ruins or Visa Fraud for example.
Nobody ever says well done when he does a good job,it is just taken for granted. If you were better informed, you would know how much Dr Allen raises in funds, equipment and outside assistance for Belize, not for personal gain but for the love of the country and its people.
Have you ever considered the complexities of working with unmotivated staff who are protected by socialistic labor laws, let alone ensuring they comply with world industry standards.
Now as you suggest, if there was a performance bonus, however based on personal dedication, I would be willing to bet Dr Allen would quadruple his salary with ease.
You might want to rethink your outburst and reconsider your remarks.
