Retired Public Servants honored at 2nd Annual Recognition Ceremony

Today at the Conference Room of the Central Health Region in Belize City some fifteen retired public servants were honored at the second annual recognition ceremony. Retired from different departments within the public sector, the honorees were acknowledged for their years of service and wealth of knowledge. The event is held within the list of activities for Public Service Week and by extension, World Public Service Day, annually celebrated on the twenty-third of June. News Five spoke with organizer, Annisa Perdomo and honoree, Kenneth Gillett about the event.

Annisa Perdono, Rep., Public Service Day Committee, Belize City

Annisa Perdono

“This is the second year we are recognizing these retired public officers. This was an initiative we started last year—the Belize City Public Service Committed—started this and we put it as a part of our public service week. We think that it is very important for us to remember our own retired public officers. They have a wealth of knowledge to share with us and we want to recognize them. So today that is what we are doing. We are giving them an award, we are doing a lunch for them; sitting down with them and enjoying their experience as retired public officers.”

Kenneth Gillett, Honoree

“It is something that I think career public servants because you spend your life so to speak or you really pay your dues. Like in my case, I spent over thirty years working for government. I gave up a lot of opportunities to serve and I think the award is a good recognition for people like me.  I started in the lands and surveys from 1965 and then worked all the way through from survey technician to commissioner of lands and survey and I’m glad for the opportunity that I can move on and do my own thing.”

Duane Moody

“What advice would you have for those that are in the system right now?”

Kenneth Gillett

“That’s a good question because I think one of the main things that people should do is prepare for retirement.”
