Shooting death of young escapee charged with carnal knowledge

David Griffith

A young man has been shot and killed in Punta Gorda by the police.  The cop who pulled the trigger has been named in a previous shooting death, but was never charged. An internal investigation has been launched, following the shooting of eighteen year old Rasheed Elijio just after eight this morning. According to a release sent by the police, around five-ten this morning, a police officer and a prison officer attached to the precinct were escorting prisoners, Lino Ical convicted for Drug Trafficking, along with nineteen year old Brian Garcia and Elijio; both remanded for carnal knowledge offences. But, as the men were being boarded on to a James Bus en route to the Hattieville Prison, Garcia and Elijio, who were handcuffed together, escaped. Ical, however, did not escape.  A search was launched and by eight-twenty-five, a call to the station by police constable David Griffith informed that Elijio was shot dead and was being transported to the Punta Gorda Hospital. Elijio was, according to initial reports, shot to the left side of the body while the escapees were sighted in the Carib Reserve Area. The circumstance into the shooting death of the prisoner, who was not armed, is now under investigation and Superintendent Robert Mariano has been deployed to Punta Gorda to head the investigation. Among the many questions being asked is the use of lethal force to subdue a pair of handcuffed prisoners, who were not deemed armed and dangerous.  Police have not confirmed if Griffith fired the fatal shot, but we can say that Griffith was named in the 2010 killing of Teddy Murillo.

  5. mad@gob says:

We keep moving the policemen around when we discover their criminal ways. But that does not change their criminal mines. We have got to find an easier way to pluck them out. If we don`t we will continue to have police criminals.

  6. Hatari says:

This is murder. You do not shoot unarmed, handcuffed detainees even when they are trying to escape. Once again, this just proves that our police department is totally enept at training and supervising our officers. When will the GOB get off their bureaucratic fat @$$#$ and pay attention to the security and safety of our cititzens? There are over 50 police officers currently on interdiction, right now.

  7. NY says:

This guy is a murderer…..there was no need for him to shoot an unarmed subdued individual. He needs to be kicked out of the Belize police force because this is the second time he has murder someone. People from Punta Gorda are some of the most peaceful individuals in the jewel, so for this guy to go there and traumatize this tranquil place, I find it very troubling.

  8. Storm says:

I’m not greatly sympathetic about the escapee — you run, you take your chances you might not make it. In Roman times, when a prisoner escaped, the guard who let the escape succeed had to serve out the rest of the prisoner’s sentence. So they adopted the justification of killing escaping prisoners.

I am concerned that Compol should carefully look at officer Griffith, who previously was suspected of murder, but never cleared and never charged. Is that case still open? It should be!

  9. giselle says:
