Senior employee from the GST is remanded for a San Pedro shooting

Reynaldo Verde

Reynaldo Verde, a senior employee of the General Sales Tax Department, will spend time behind bars after he was remanded to the Belize Central Prison this morning.  Verde was charged in the San Pedro Magistrate’s Court with dangerous harm for an incident which occurred at the Holiday Hotel on Easter Sunday.  Reports are that the forty-year old Verde got into an altercation with San Pedro resident, twenty-nine year old Allen Martinez, and in the process drew his licensed nine millimeter Luger pistol and shot Martinez once in the left hip. This morning, Verde, represented by attorney Michael Peyrefitte, was denied bail at the objection of Sergeant Raymond Berry since it is the second time that he has been charged for a similar offense with a firearm.  In 2004 Verde was criminally charged after he shot a man in a nightclub during an altercation. Magistrate Sherigne Rodriguez agreed to the objection of bail and Verde will stay behind bars until May thirtieth, when he is to re-appear in the San Pedro Magistrate’s Court.

  1. Bear says:

With a prior offense, Verde is too stupid to work for GOB and too dangerous to have a license for a gun.

Public officials need to be held to a higher standard of behavior, not a lower one.

I’d guess he’s got a drinking problem, since both of his shootings occurred in bars, another strike against him. He’s lucky the victim survived, or he’d deserve to hang.

  2. Marie says:

If a george street gang member from Belize living in san pedro rachets up the argument after an innocent request for an apology, then he deserves to be shot if thats the only way to stop him.

  3. Rod says:

    Lock him up

  4. Al says:

Good keep him there, sooner or later if he is not stopped he will kill someone. He must have gotten off easily in 2004, so he was comfortable in doing it again. I hope since this is his second time he pays for his stupidity. Thank you judge for making a smart decision to hold bail.

  5. islander says:

Lock him up, throw away the keys. Its guys like this who make legitimate gun owners look bad.

Only cause you have a pistol, it does not mean you can shoot anyone you feel like shooting.

The law states that you need to overcome the threat with the minimal amount of force required to subdue the threat.

  6. Storm says:

@Marie, sad to say, even if it was a gang member — and I hate them all — we can’t shoot people in public for refusing to apologize, rudeness, or any other words alone. If there was no physical threat, there’s no justification to attempt to kill.

Verde has shot people twice in bar arguments — don’t you think he’s the problem?

Dont talk !@#$ if you dont know the full story or BOTH sides of the story. He was simply protecting himself the way anyone else would if they had a LICENSED firearm. As usual the criminals walk free and the victims are charged. He isnt STUPID, he was assaulted and acted the way anyone would. Thanks Marie for being the only one to comment something sensible. Again, dont talk !@#$ if you dont know THE FULL STORY. Also, he does not have a drinking problem. He was enjoying the easter holidays with his family at a beach party. Wasnt aware that if you go to a bar that means you have a drinking problem. Its not like he was just walking San Pedro looking for someone to shoot. He was simply protecting himself and his family.

  8. Eye in the Sky says:

I am glad to see someone from the GeSTapo locked up in jail.

  9. mustard stand says:

He seems to have a definite problem this is the second time, and why, is he still with GOB and why has his gun license not been pulled, He is a danger to society and he represents the GOB. He should be fired for “bad conduct”, surely, there is something that states, he has to keep some type of a professional “image” being a senior officer. probably not. lol. He probably harass business also, with attitude..

  10. sam dow says:

big @$$!@#$, leave him in jail, or better an eye for and eye.
