Minister of Sports impressed with his achievements in sports

One man who is impressed with the direction in which sports has been heading under his watch is Minister of State Herman Longsworth. During his address at the consultations on the National Sports Sector Strategy earlier today, Longsworth acknowledged the work of the Football Federation of Belize under its current administration, as well as the success of the eighty-fifth Annual Holy Saturday Cross Country Cycling Classic. That race was held under the auspices of the National Olympic Committee in light of an ongoing dispute between the Belize Cycling Association and the National Sports Council.

“As you are aware the National Sports Council does not, any longer, recognize the Belize Cycling Association as an association.  They haven’t been registered with the National Sports Council and so the National Olympic Committee came back onboard.  They were originally onboard and then they came back onboard and said, “Okay well listen, we feel we ought to assist you guys with running with this show.”  And I welcomed that because we really don’t want to be involved in those kinds of things, except when we must.  So when they decided to do it and said they were prepared to do it I quite [readily], without any reluctance, handed it over to them and I must say look at what came out of it.  The Cross Country was one of the better Cross Countries we’ve seen in many, many years and I think they did a very good job and they ought to be commended for it.  It really ought to be commended and it shows that whenever you take the personal agendas out of these kinds of activities we can succeed.  It really proves my point.”

“What does that mean going forward, in terms of either resolving the current impasse or the tensions therein within the association and moving cycling forward?”

Herman Longsworth

“Well we have agreed to allowing the National Olympic Committee to move with the process of electing a new executive for the Belize Cycling Association.  That process should start, I think, this weekend okay, but they are running with it.  The National Sports Council will oversee the process to ensure that it’s legitimate and we will then, providing we agree it’s legitimate, accept the results of the process.”
