Jealousy; woman kills another in Sarteneja

Veronica Gonzalez

We start tonight’s newscast with an unusual murder in which a Sarteneja woman allegedly took the life of another. The incident happened on Sunday night in the village and it also involved another victim. The two were stabbed multiple times and were rushed for medical treatment but one did not make it to the nearest hospital in Corozal Town and died on the way. The stabbing took place within eyeshot of the police station just before midnight. The victims are sisters who had been out dancing when they were attacked by a reportedly jealous resident of the village. Duane Moody reports.

Duane Moody

“Ever year here in Sarteneja Village in the Corozal District, an annual boat race known as regatta is held on Easter Sunday. It’s a fun-filled family event that culminates here at the park just across from the police station. But just before midnight that ambience was shattered when two sisters were brutally stabbed; one ended fatally.”

Two sisters, Veronica Gonzalez and Wendy Aragon, were socializing at the park and had gone to use the outside toilet at the Aragon family house just a block away on Bishop Hopkins Street. It was there that their assailant, Norma Pena, attacked the sisters with a shiny black handle knife.

Randy Aragon, Husband of Stabbing Victim

“We come from the dance and we were going home. So I gone dah my mom’s house to pick up the pickup and make I go with my brother because I was staying there. We live dah Belize City, we was just there for the Easter Sunday. We gone deh fi pick up the pickup, but this lady Veronica Gonzalez ask fi use the bathroom. So I tell ahn go use it while I take out the pickup.  Veronica Gonzalez the shout for help; Randy, Randy help. This lady Norma done stab the two of them. My gial was trying to survive, fighting with her; trying to take the knife from her but impossible. And she get injured all around the hands.”

“I saw wounds around the neck and the stomach; that’s for Veronica and Wendy [had injuries] on the arm, and left chest, breast.”

Duane Moody

“Was veronica dead?”

Eddie Garcia

“No she wasn’t dead at that time; she was still breathing.”

Veronica was stabbed to the right side of the neck and the stomach, while Wendy was stabbed to the chest and received several cut wounds. Both were rushed to the hospital, but Veronica perished while being transported to the Corozal community Hospital. Eddie Garcia, who is Pena’s nephew, says he was awaken by the commotion and assisted in putting Veronica into the police pickup.

Eddie Garcia

“We heard some noise in the backyard and when I came out I saw Wendy Aragon reach with some blood on her arms and chest and she told us that her sister needed help at the bathroom. When I came out, the husband was already out here. Veronica Gonzalez was lying on the bathroom floor.  I assisted a police officer to help carry Veronica Gonzalez to the roadside where a police vehicle took her to the hospital.”

But from all accounts, it appears that jealousy was the motive behind the stabbing murder.

“It was a long time when my brother use to mi wah be boyfriend to Veronica but nothing go long, but they separate. And it take so much time when he get this gial (Norma). But I think the family told her that how Veronica used to deal with my brother and then drunk she remembered that and took it out on Veronica. But the first who get stab is my wife.”

Wendy was taken to the Northern Regional Hospital where she is now in a stable condition. Pena has since been charged with the murder of Veronica and attempted murder upon Wendy. She was taken to the Corozal Magistrate’s Court where she was arraigned and has since been remanded. Duane Moody for News Five.

While police investigate the Sarteneja murder, they have in custody a man from the village of Caledonia following a report by a woman that he inflicted multiple injuries on her while in a jealous rage. The woman, Cruzita Pott, was taken to the Caledonia Police station by her mother, who claimed that just after two on Saturday morning, Cruzita’s ex, Geraldo Taca, arrived at her house in a drunken stupor.  Taca reportedly forced Cruzita out of the house and used a machete to chop her several times. Investigations reveal that earlier that night the victim was hanging out at the village park in the company of another man which allegedly sent Taca into a wrath of jealously. Cruzita was transported to the Corozal Community Hospital and then to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, while Police have detained Taca pending a charge of Attempted Murder.

  1. Corozal Nightclub Association says:

The Corozal Liquor License Board and Town Council is out of control.
They issue permits to have loud dances and issue extensions without concern to residents who are sick, the elderly and children.
There is a Sound Proof Law in Belize but it does not exist in Corozal Town.
Nightclubs that have spent much money soundproffing their establishments are losing money because the open air noisy bars get extensions until 4am and even on Sundays.
Minister of Local Government please look into the matter and uphold the law. The bribery has to stop and the law should be followed.
Please Channel 5 look into this problem as the Mayor does not care because he is in the casinos until the wee hours. visit Corozal and listen to the NOISE on weekends. HELP !

A young life cut short, another person injured, another going to prison and I am sure many more lives are negatively impacted all because of this one act of violence and ignorance!

Think before you act my people!

  3. Concerned young Belizean says:

Every person has a right to be happy, those who envy should not take it out with hatred but rather do something to produce their own happiness. Very sad how our Belizean women are tranforming now. Infact it is very diminishing to have these kinds of occurences in our once peaceful Belize.

a victim is not necessarily a victim until both sides of the story are heard. but still death is not necessary. dont lower belizean women since women involved are not belizean natives.
