While motive still uncertain in Belize City homicide

Michael Heusner

Violence appeared to have been contained in the City over the Easter weekend, that is, until Monday night. Michael Heusner, a fisherman, was returning to his house from a trip to a nearby grocery store when two gunmen opened fire on him.  The father of one was hit on the head; he did not stand a chance and died on the spot. The motive for the latest homicide in the city has not been ascertained by the police. News Five’s Isani Cayetano spoke to family members this morning.

Twenty-eight year-old Michael Heusner was dispatched in a spray of forty caliber rounds on Monday night, as he was making his way back to his family home on Courtney’s Crescent.  The younger brother of famed Belizean artist Rachel Heusner had just exited Jianvin Shop, at the corners of Mahogany and Mopan streets, when a pair of gunmen emerged on the scene.  As many as six shots were fired in his direction before they rode away on separate bicycles.

“Apparently he went to the Chinese grocery store in front of Brown’s Butane Gas Station and went he went there to buy something from the Chinese store he was shot down.”

Isani Cayetano

“Have you gotten an idea as to how many injuries he sustained as a result of the shooting incident?”

Voice of: Sister of Deceased

“Well apparently they shot him up and he was [pronounced] dead on the spot.  They shot him in his head.”

Heusner, who grew up in an area behind the Belize City Center known as Backa Town, had reportedly been forewarned about the presence of rival gang members in the vicinity.  Taking his chances, he proceeded on foot across a nearby canal bridge unto Mahogany Street.

“What have you learned otherwise?  Was this motivated by any previous incident with anyone in that neighborhood?”

Voice of: Sister of Deceased

“Concerning that I am unaware.  He was, like anybody else, celebrating the Easter time with his family.”

In October of last year, Heusner was acquitted of the charges of robbery and wounding, after allegedly stealing a bicycle from Ervin Hamilton months earlier.  A connection between the two incidents, as a possible motive, is yet to be determined.

Voice of: Sister of Deceased

“At this moment we are not seeking any revenge because we believe in God and the bible and it says in the bible that God says that, “Vengeance is mine.  I will repay.”  So God will take care of this.”

Until then Belize City police are investigating the homicide.  Despite recovering a number of expended Smith and Wesson brand shells from the scene, they are yet to make an arrest.  According to the family, notwithstanding Heusner’s past, he was a devoted husband and parent.

Voice of: Sister of Deceased

“He was a kindhearted person, basically his life revolved around his family.  He worked and he was a fisherman, he worked and [came here], worked and go home everyday to his daughter and his wife. It’s very devastating and I’ll just say that it’s the worst All Fools’ Day of our life, you know.”

The body of Michael Heusner remains at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital morgue, where a post mortem examination has been scheduled. Reporting for News Five, I am Isani Cayetano.

But two Belize City men were fortunate to have escaped with their lives on Holy Thursday. Both were shot and injured shortly before midnight.  Thirty year old Jamil Richardson and twenty-five year old Dennis Molins were standing on Partridge Street conversing when they were blindsided by a lone gunman, who emerged from the rear of a nearby tire shop.  The shooter then opened fire on his unsuspecting targets, injuring Richardson on both ankles and upper left back and Molins to his left leg.  Both men were transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital where they are receiving medical attention.
