3 persons arrested and charged for fishing undersized conch

The conch season will be closed from July first to September thirtieth, but three persons have been arrested and fined for fishing undersized conch in southern Belize. The bust was made by the Southern Environmental Association, known as SEA, which co-manages various marine areas. Two persons, who were caught with nine hundred and eleven undersized conchs in the Placencia area, were fined eighteen thousand two hundred and twenty dollars on March fifth or in default, a one year prison term. There was a third bust by the SEA during a routine patrol at the Independence Village dock side. One person was caught with ninety seven undersized market clean conchs and was subsequently fined one thousand nine hundred and forty five dollars; failure to pay would result in a six month prison term. The SEA advises that it is illegal to sell or buy diced conch since the practice does not allow for conch size to be determined.
