Alleged carnal knowledge offender nabbed while trying to flee across border

A Belize City warehouse keeper, who Police caught at the Belize Western border after he allegedly tried to flee with a pregnant minor to neighboring Guatemala, was today slapped with two counts of Unlawful Carnal Knowledge. He is eighteen-year-old Alberto Antonio Barraza of Belize City. This afternoon, Barraza appeared before Chief Magistrate Anne Marie Smith and was read the two charges for sexual offences. He was remanded to the Belize Central Prison until May thirtieth 2013 when he is to re-appear in court. The allegations are that on two separate occasions, Barraza had sexual intercourse with the minor, the first incident reportedly occurred on March twenty second, 2012, when she was only fourteen years old. The second is said to have happened on December twelfth, 2012, when the girl was fifteen years old.  Both were living together until a report was made against Barraza and he was intercepted at the border and charged.

    This is absolute insanity. Common sense must prevail at times. The norm for relationship in this culture, MayaLadino, should override the antiquated carnal knowledge law. Carnal knowledge laws are meant to protect sexual predators from harming the innocent not to criminalize teenagers who are not breaking any laws and whose relationships are accepted as the norm in their culture.
