Teacher and students charged for unlawful hunting

On March fifth, a black howler monkey was captured and savagely beaten allegedly at the hands of four third form students of the Belize High School of Agriculture in southern Orange Walk. But despite immediate rehabilitation, the endangered species did not survive the attack and perished exactly one week later, on March twelfth. Video circulated showed that in an act of animal cruelty, the primate was tied up and harassed. An investigation was launched by the Forest Department and on Tuesday, charges were levied against four persons—the teacher, Angel Carillo and three students. Each has been charged with Unlawful Hunting. Hunting, according to the laws regarding wildlife, is defined as the act of killing, molesting, taking or attempting to kill, take and/or molest any species of wildlife by any method. The group is expected to be arraigned in the Orange Walk Magistrate’s Court by Monday morning. The maximum penalty is one thousand dollars or six months imprisonment.

  1. Tina says:

Beyond disgusting……animals themselves community service with a idiot shirt would be more appropriate especially for the “teacher”.

  2. BMNJ says:

Add in 100 hours of mandatory community service at the Belize Zoo for each of the accuse.

  3. not again says:

I think the penalty is too little. They were NOT hunting.

  4. Oscar965 says:

That type of penalty continues to promote cruelty to animals. Our laws need some serious updating. And what is the school’s position on this matter? Will the students be expelled? Will the tacher be fired? Can the teacher loose her licence because of this type of behavior? Will the teacher continue at the school as usual? What is the position of the Teacher’s Union? I only see them on the news when they strike? What is the position of the union when a Teacher behaves in this manner? Too many questions left to answer???

  5. moses EX PC says:

  6. Eye in the Sky says:

I think someone should hunt the students and the teacher so they see what it fells like.

Any George Street Gang Members up to the task? It will be fun !

  7. Big Ben says:

I blame the teacher more than the students. he should have been the one to stop the students. not the one to instigate this cruel act.

  8. Storm says:

At least they have been charged, but I wonder why all the early reports said 4 boys were involved, and only 3 have been charged?

They all deserve some time in detention, and the most for the teacher who proved himself too depraved ands stupid to be “educating” our children. And napping in the bushes on the job, to boot! [Drink or hungover , I assume.]
