Guatemala instructs schools to use maps without borders

Belize has been appearing as part of Guatemala in numerous publications. As recent as February at a meeting of the Organization of American States, Belize protested the inclusion of our territory in that country. Well tonight, it is clear that there is a deliberate decision in Guatemala to place Belize as part of their territory. The Vice-Minister of Education, Evelyn Amado de Segura, has written to directors in that ministry instructing that a map provided by Gustavo Orellano, a former foreign minister and the executive secretary of the disbanded Comision de Belice is to be circulated widely. The ministerial decree says that it is correct to place Belizean territory within the map of Guatemala; it should be highlighted with a dotted line accompanied by a phrase that says, “Territorial referendum, insular and maritime pending resolution.” The minister also says it is indispensable for each and everyone to participate in the efforts to recover the image and spirit of Guatemala to guarantee that no publication written or in digital form should be published without including Belize as part of Guatemala. According to the minister, no publication should reach children and young people in the school system which would be offensive to the Guatemalan nationality. According to today’s Prensa Libre, the ministerial decree was made in consultation with the ministry of foreign affairs and the Comision de Belice.

    ALL BS OF POLITICS.
SWELLING THE HEADS OF GUATEMALANS THAT GETTING BELIZE IS GOING TO MAKE THEM RICHER !!!
INTELLIGENT GUATEMALANS KNOW FOR SURE THAT BRITAIN WILL NOT GIVE BELIZE TO GUATEMALA.
WE SPEAK ENGLISH, WE ARE A TOTALLY DIFFERENT PEOPLE, WE ARE BELIZE. GUATEMALA IS GUATEMALA, AND DEEP IN THEIR HEARTS THEY KNOW THAT, JUST THEIR GUATEMALAN GOV PLAYING POLITICS, WASTING TIME.

  2. Storm says:

Our government must recall our ambassador in Guatemala, and send theirs back home.

Our UN representative must present a resolution to rebuke Guatemala for this kind of gross informational aggression.

Never in history did Guatemala rule over Belize, but clearly they indeed to conquer us one way or another.

If they come, we must send so many of them home in bodybags that they cannot justify their losses. Guatemala is vulnerable, but we must be resolute and resourceful in fighting them. David killed Goliath, we can defeat Guatemala.

  3. Gone fishing says:

Why bother having an election or get the ICJ involved?

The Guat govt position is outrageous: stop being a country, we own you 100%.

And the GOB legal incompetence to fumble or corrupt anything they touch.
Amend the constitution for their fix, or just ignore reality, the other fix, won’t work at ICJ.
Their legal theory of “natural law” should get some laughs at ICJ.

  4. Hubert says:

I think that Guatemala needs to stop their bs claim .Belize is for us Belizeans i want to know who is willing to die for their country i know i am if push comes to shove .

  5. BmpResident says:

So this is the result of “giving in” to the idea of going to Referendum to decide on our territorial integrity as a sovereign nation.

So, on 6 October 2013, If you are a PROUD BELIZEAN AND LOVE BELIZE, you need to go and VOTE NO AT THE REFERENDUM!!!!

  6. Alexjr says:

seems dat guate owns Belize already !!!! well as of today, VOTE, VOTE NO,,NO…NO to the ICJ.

This sort of campaign is what Belize should have been doing since its independence. Guatemala has been taking advantage of every possible opportunity to make it look like Belize is the aggressor. It is past time for Belize to place more spotlight nationally and internationally on Guatemala’s aggression on Belize. Have the propaganda minister from the ministry of national security make a documentary on the social, economic and security effect Guatemala`s claim is having on Belize. Invite foreign media; internationalize what migration, hunting of wildlife, harvesting of forest products, destruction of forest and mining are doing to Belize. In the next three months they will be cutting down another 2000 acres of our forest. If he gets there after the fires are gone put some tires into the burnt out fields and take footage, put them on Face book and in documentaries. La La Prensa does a good job in making Belize look like an aggressor; it is time Belize gets its own La Prensa. Have the Anglo Guatemalan dispute be thought in all schools In Belize.

  8. enrique cocom says:

those are serious issues Belize must address. i say, no nationality to Guatemalans and Belize must protest this at the international level.

  9. Joe says:

The big question is where is Asad Shoman, when the People need him.
It is obvious that OAS, has no interest in stopping, the Guatemalan Politicians, on there direct attack of the nation of Belize and its people, yet I blame the Government of Belize, for not addressing the issue with the UN.
Guatemala is like Argentina, The Falkland Islanders are today voting on a referendum to keep the status Quo. The US Government dose not take side but with the referendum the people will force the US capital to take side, and sure they will respect the decisions of the islanders,
so I urge Belizeans to vote, it will only protect our nation.
Long Live Belize long live the Queen of England, Long live Democracy in our Jewel.

Teach your kids !@$$ they will end up right in Belize jail.

  11. Paco Smith says:

This was not unforeseen, because once the GOB signed on to “confidence building measures” which acknowledged an “adjacency zone”, it provided Guatemala with a golden opportunity to highlight the matter in this fashion.

From a Guatemalan perspective, concerning this matter, they are playing the GOB and the entire matter like a master violinist…almost flawlessly. That’s why on the occsaion when the Guatemalan Ambassador to the OAS used a similar map, Belize found virtually no overt support from its colleagues at the OAS. Needless to say, the OAS was less than forthcoming with support as well, for they are the primary facilitators of this unfortunate situation, in which our “so-called leaders” have placed the nation of Belize.

I believe this is a manifestation of the shortsightedness of successive GOB Administrations. Nonetheless, although I don’t like it, the matter serves to highlight the need for us to continue to attune Belizeans as to the folly of going to the ICJ.

Belize, Sovereign and Free – NO ICJ!

  12. XMON says:

ITS FUNNY HOW OUR GVRNMNT HELPS GUATS HERE WE GIV THEM JOBS. IN BMP THE CITY MARKET IS LITERALLY FLOODED WITH GUATS IN THE SORROUNDING THEY HAVE THERE VILLAGES AND YET THERE GVNMNT CANNOT SEE HOW BLZ IS HELPING THEM. WAT IF OUR GVNMNT WOULD TAKE ALL THESE PEAPLE OUT. WAT WOULD HAPPEN

  13. Lucas says:

Channel 5 presents only part of the story. The rest is and I translate:…… NEVERTHELESS, IT IS CLEAR THAT BELIZE WILL NEVER AGAIN BE PART OF GUATEMALA. ( Maria Ester Ortega Expert in the education of Investigation and Social Studies). And again: Mario Rodriquez educational Analizist for the Institute of National Problems from the University of San Carlos said: IT IS INADEQUATE BECAUSE GUATEMALA HAS RECOGNIZED THE INDEPENDENCE OF BELIZE IN 1991 AND THIS MAP WILL ONLY CAUSE A CONFUSED NATIONALISM. This information is taken from the same edition of La Prensa from which Channel 5 got theirs. Conclsion: I have concluded based on research provided by an exmember of LA COMISION DE BELICE that Guatemalans experts on this Belize thing see a ZERO chance of success at the ICJ.
My fellow Belizeans, in the very near future I will make avialable to you all the research I am talking about. In the meantime, be prepared to change your mind. All I am waiting is clarification on what are we taking to the ICJ. Is it land border only, or is it land border, insular and maritime area? I asked the question to Fonseca and Elrington but their silence is deafening. The guatemalans have already made it clear to me. It is these rascals of Belizean lawyers politicians who are confusing us.

  14. Joe devine says:

I fully agree with Paco. Well said. What we need is action and condemnation from our leaders.

  15. GT Citizen says:

Be prepared to speak Español !! jeje no just joking, as mentioned by Lucas this has been done to follow the law in Guatemala, guatemalans dont expect and more important DONT WANT for belizeans to become guatemalans we are completly different even our definition of developement is diferent…

Now XMON Belize is not helping Guatemala the fact that in the market you found a lot of guatemalans only speaks of the incompetence of the belizean government to foster national industry and agriculture most of that people lives in Melchor and they cross the border to sell you the stuff now if you take them out probably a lot of people in Belize will have some challenges finding food and supplies…

  16. Elick says:

…a leader once said that people will one day want freedom so bad that government ought to get of their way…or so the quote goes but the idea here is that we should stop waiting on GOB to take nationalistic action and take matters into our hands. Those that have that strong sentiment in the preservation of the Belizean integrity should get together and do something. We need to make our people stop going to buy in melchor, this may require to physically gather at the border and use threat if necessary to discourage our people from going to melchor and the same time don’t allow anyone to come sell or work in BELIZE, we got to touch them where it hurts the most and I guarantee you my BELIZEANS thing will change but I may warn you it will get nasty but its do or die. We can also demand that the GOB create some sort of commercial zone where Belizean can buy all what is sold in melchor, its like creating a playground for our children in our backyard no need to to go to the neighbour, they are too evil. My BELIZEANS I mayy be too patriotic to point of violence but a man ought to do all that is necessary to protect his home…I am ready to do just that and may GOD save US…
