No football prize money, but more football fields

Ruperto Vicente

While the big news was the status of national team coach Leroy Sherrier-Lewis and a new appointment for local football legend Charles Slusher, there was also some bad news to report. Because the Belize Jaguars placed fourth in the Copa Centro Americana 2013 the team was entitled to some football prize money, which Vicente stated would be shared among the players. Well that money never materialized, and today Vicente told us why.

Ruperto Vicente, President, F.F.B.

“We have not been able to collect our prize monies. The prize monies due Belize as a result of our qualification to Gold Cup and coming in fourth is twenty-five thousand U.S. dollars. But we are unable to collect this because most of this money had been committee to UNCAF through a loan made by the past administration. Even though we had promised our players that we would share these prize monies with them, we are unable to do so now because these monies are not coming to us. But I am still in negotiation with UNCAF to see if the bills signed on by the past administration can be forgiven and that prize money is given to us.”

That’s bad news for sure, but on the bright side Vicente says that FIFA has approved eight five-a-side football fields which are to be placed in all districts.

Does our league owe any more money to anyone?

Have the books been audited from the past administration? I’d hate to see more unpleasant surprises in this area.

You know, if Ruperto had pursued Chimilio and layed down the full extent of the law on him, our boys who sacrificed blood sweat and tears on the ball field would at least have some monetary compensation to enjoy from it.
With all due respect to Mr. Ruperto, I think he was kinda soft on Bertie. Chimilio should have had his day in court.
