Drug plane took off from Spanish Lookout Airstrip

A U.S. registered plane landed without authorization in Venezuela on February twenty first. The men in the plane were identified as fifty-one year old Canadian citizen, Sawatzky David William, and thirty-one year old Colombian national, Jorge Bustamante. Officials of the Scientific, Penal and Criminal Investigations Branch performed a drug screening in the aircraft which tested positive for cocaine residue. The two men were charged with conspiracy and transportation of illicit trafficking of narcotic and psychotropic drugs.  The plane left from an airstrip in Cayo without filing a flight plan with the Belize Civil Aviation Authority. Pictures available to News Five show the Aero Commander with registration number N345MP at that airstrip in Spanish Lookout. The last known owner of the plane is U.S. national and retiree, Max Hetherington, who had apparently put the plane up for sale.  Sawatzky, the pilot, who is now a prisoner in Venezuela, is a Canadian Mennonite farmer from Mango Creek in the south.  So far, the police department has not indicated if the owners of the private airstrip will be questioned.

  1. Liberty & Freedom says:

Most Mennonites work hard and are good citizens; there are always a few rotten apples in the barrel. It is a shame that one rotten individual has to ruin the 50 years of hard work that has gone into building a highly developed farming community of Mennonites. Now many people will look at all successful Mennonites as rich drug dealers.

  2. Truth says:

if they don’t question the airstrip then its an incomplete investigation and again the corruption will continue.

and will show, there is collusion from top to bottom.
over and over again.. and nothing is done

this has always been the report given to the media by the law when it turns to be drug related, we never have a conclusion nor a criminal charge against any person or group caught in this illicit deals. no wonder we never have a good reputation internationally for the same reason.

Was surprised to learn of the number of registered private airstrips in Belize. You failed to mention the owner of the airport either through an oversight of fear rendering your piece on the subject: superficial. Failure to do so exonerates them of any part they may have played

Could it be that where the plane landed, where it took off, , whose air strip it took off from, who flew the plane, and who own the plane, and who the previous owner of the plan was, are all very distant stories apart, as far as from Japan to Jamaica perhaps! I bet there is at least one completely unrelated to the other. Whereas the public throws everything into one pot and begins to ‘cook up’ stuff. Its everyone’s right to cook!! lol

  6. Belinean says:

The trend in Belize and also abroad is that the big time dealers usually are not dealt the same way as someone who might have a small bit of drugs, eg someone in Belize gets so much years in jail for a piece of joint or whatever it is called but the bid dealers get away. Hmmmm something wrong with this picture!

  7. Proud 2b Belizean says:

To clear up some questions: The airstrip is actually owned by the Spanish Lookout community, and that Canadian Mennonite has never lived in Spanish Lookout. The Plane was previously owned by an American Citizen who was renting the hanger from a Spanish Lookout resident to store his Plane and as far as I know had sold the Plane and unregistered it.
