World Culture Day at Horizon Academy

Culture was on display in many forms today at Horizon Academy at mile three on the Northern Highway. As a way to promote international culture day, the students were invited to project the culture of various countries, from far away places such as Greece to nearby Mexico. There was food, music, dance and many other symbols that showed the diversity and the way of life in Belize and other nations. News Five’s Jose Sanchez reports.

Adriani Coleman, Teacher, Horizon Academy

“Today is our international culture day. Our school celebrates six learning cycles. This cycle is called Beyond the Horizon. In this cycle, each class is assigned a country and we learn the different things about the countries—the national symbols, the food, the dress—and then we display it on a day like today. This year we’ve gone bigger and we have invited other schools to and to see our displays. We have many countries from around the world. We have Colombia, we have Egypt, we have Brazil, there is Italy, we have Greece, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico and so on.

Jose Sanchez, Reporting

The culture day has an assortment of dishes from the countries that are represented as part of the display. The students have become more aware of the diverse cultures of the world and in Belize.

“How many students attend Horizon and are participating on today’s event?”

Adriani Coleman

“Currently we have a hundred and thirty-five students enrolled and they are all participating; they’ve all been prepped for six weeks or more in what they are learning and what they are going to say. When you go into the classrooms you will see each child has a role to play in the presentation of the material.”

Like the name of the school, the students are looking towards distant shores and the Horizon. Reporting for News Five, Jose Sanchez.

Very appropriate for our melting pot nation, a stew of so many diverse cultures. I hope some of the students will be inspired to travel and see the world, and bring back the best of what they learn.
