Opposition says P.U.P. report card shows mass improvement

Francis Fonseca

And since today seemed to be report card day, at least on the political front, we asked Francis Fonseca to grade his own party in Opposition. He based his report against the backdrop of the devastating loss suffered by the P.U.P. in 2008 and says that while the internal organization continues, the party is doing what needs to be done.

Francis Fonseca, Leader of the Opposition

“Since the elections, obviously there has been a cooling off period. We have had to reflect on where we are and where we want to go. And so after the elections, we spent a few months analyzing where we are as a party and setting out for ourselves internally some very clear priorities in terms of the restructuring of the party—that is internal party work that we have been carrying out. So for several months we focused on that and that work continues and is ongoing. We’ve also had a lot of internal meetings to address many of the serious issues we are facing as a country; to discuss what the P.U.P. response is to these various sectors of our country’s economy; what plans and policies we will develop over the next few months and years as we lead up to further and future elections. So in many respects, it has been a lot of internal work taking place very quietly. We have strengthened our party organs and sought to breathe new life into them. we have tried to strengthen our party’s secretariat as well; we have made some decisions about the decentralization of our party as it relates to the work of our party caucuses in the various regions of the country—in the south, in the east and in the west. So that work is ongoing and what we are using this one year opportunity to do is to say to the Belizean people that we recognize that it is time for us to do more; we recognize that it is time for a more assertive, a more aggressive, a more forceful, a more effective People’s United Party to stand up and fight for the Belizean people. So we have done our own internal reflections. We believe that there is always a lot of work to do, but we believe that we are on the right track. There is a lot that has been done, but there is a lot more that is left to do and we are committed to doing that in a spirit of unity as a party.”

In general elections of 2008 the People’s United Party retained only six of thirty one seats, while in 2012 it managed to increase that number to fourteen seats.

  1. Gimme Some Truth says:

From the guys who had it all.

CORRUPTION, why people are poor, and governments stumble and countries are no more.
Watch out, Guatemala be watching for their advantage on this.

But I have to admit, the UDP are fast on their feet.
    No bone left un-gnawed.
In 6-12 months, outdid what PUP took ten years to rot out.

Meantime PUP is out of the picture.

Let’s check out UDP’s Guatemala ICJ plan.
    Just sit back and wait— t— t— t— t— t— t—

They will hand it to us in a speedy constitutional amendment, fait accompli!
You don’t need to understand it, you make no money on the deal.
Rest assured, more important people will profit on this.

    trust them.
It is 12 months into their re-election, they ain’t done.
And PUP is not ready for the trough.

  2. melinda says:

Why cant the PUP give us a better alternative than a Fonseca? We are tired of these same faces screwing us over and over, greedy and arrogant. So many lawyers, so many thieves. As to the Dolores, man she is something else. That woman thinks she is it, with her drmatization of everthing. She thinks she can fool us by making her voice sound soothing. I hate that woman with a passion. She is so hypocritical

  3. Bear says:

Melinda and Gimme are both right.

Both parties are corrupt to the core, and both have track records of betrayal of the people, theft, and failure to improve the nation in any important way.

We MUST have a new start so we don’t give our children the gift of the worst nation in the Caribbean, a totally failed state burdened by a Mt. Everest of national debt.

The country has adequate resources, it has a good heritage and population, it just needs a revolution or benevolent coup d’etat to begin to realize the dream that we had at independence.

Line all the old demagogues up against a wall, and let’s start over.

  4. Deron says:

And yet……despite the predictable harumph from those who either want revolution or have bought into Kremandala’s “pudp” foolishness…….the fact is that the PUP has removed some old faces and brought in a lot of new faces, some never before in politics. Fact also is..we have one government at a time, and the current one has been failing.

There will be no revolution in Belize, peaceful or otherwise, so give it up. For the forseable future there will be either a UDP government or a PUP government. That’s reality so the quicker people get past that and work to take their voting responsiblities seriously and hold the major parties accountable, the better for Belize.

And while we’re at it, the more we buy into the UDP’s brilliant strategy of blaming the PUP that governed five…FIVE!…years ago for all current ills, the more we let their current government off the hook and give them carte blanche to do as they please. UDP strategy: blame both of us as long as you keep the status quo, meaning US in power, while you do it. And we Belizeans fall for it hook line and sinker.

  5. Sheila B says:

When it comes to arrogance, Fonseca cannot hold a candle to Dean Barrow…LOL!

And I “MAKE NO APOLOGIES” for that, if you know what I mean.

  6. Initiate says:

I still think it is sadder that we don’t have a better opposition than the sadness that is happening in the present administration.

  7. Henry says:

Hi Mr. Francis Fonseca. let me give you a tip.
I do agree that the UDP could do a lot beter, and i wish thy would. but for you to get reconition and suport from the belizian people we need to see you look at thinks positifly try to help the curent Government and aplod them for the thinks thy do good, and STOP putting gang murder into the political Game. it only makes me think that mabe UDP is inspiering these senless murders. so please if you want to gain power do somting Wise.
