Mayor envisions roundabout at the Mahogany crossroads

Motorists traveling along Central American Boulevard would notice that traffic lights at its inter-section with Mahogany Street have been malfunctioning for quite some time.  While City Hall awaits the arrival of a much needed component in order to repair the stoplight, Mayor Bradley has his sights on building a roundabout at the crossroads.  The signal system, Bradley says, is costly and poorly supported.

Darrell Bradley, Belize City Mayor

Darrell Bradley

“One of the things with the traffic lights, I personally think it’s a good system but I don’t think traffic lights are a good fit for Belize City because when you look at traffic lights, it’s not a traffic light, it’s a system and we don’t have the system to support traffic lights and it’s very expensive to maintain.  The parts are not obtainable in Belize City so I favor the roundabout and actually, when the Central American Boulevard is upgraded there is plans for a roundabout in that very vicinity.  But of course we’ve been trying to source the part for the traffic light so we could repair, but every single traffic light in Belize City has malfunctioned at some point and when you have a roundabout it’s a far easier thing to operate and it’s far less maintenance.  So my personal view is that you are likely going to see additional problems with more traffic lights and we’re trying to move away from that system until we can have a full system of traffic lights all along streets in Belize City so that that system would work.”

NOT SO FAST! I wish he would explain about the recently paved streets that have to be paved again, within WEEKS, because of ABOMINABLE materials and workmanship!

Mayor is a lawyer, he needs to sue the contractors who took our money for cement and gave us manure instead. Don’t let those thieves profit — unless mayor wrote a bad contract that fails to protect the taxpayers. That would be malpractice.

Oh, yes, one moer thought — the explanation that he needs to tear up roads and build roundabouts because “streetlight parts” are hard to find in Belize City is one of the lamest explanations I think I’ve ever heard come from a politician! If we need to bring street lights in to improve our traffic flow, let’s bring them in. Not so hard to do anymore, what with the Internet available to find sources anywhere in the world, and companies everywhere ready to compete with good prices, etc. Or is that just an excuse to keep siphoning money to crony-contractors?
