New police booth inaugurated at San Cas Plaza

Story PictureThe Police Department has established a new presence in one of Belize City’s busiest areas. The new booth, located at San Cas Plaza near the flag monument, will serve the surrounding commercial areas as well as the thousands of students who attend nearby schools. The twelve thousand dollar cost of the wooden building and furnishings was underwritten by the San Cas Group of Companies, represented at today’s inauguration by Santino Castillo. While the new facility will be manned daily from six a.m. to eleven p.m., we asked Police Commissioner Gerald Westby why many recently built police booths remain locked and empty.

Gerald Westby, Police Commissioner
?You?re working within your resources. We cannot necessarily man all the booth twenty-four, seven which would be the ideal situation. We are hoping with the advent of recruits coming out in December we will be able to increase our presence at these booths. Especially when the peak activities, social and economic activities, we try to spread the resources to spread around because it is difficult for us twenty-four seven.?

Stewart Krohn, Reporting
?Commissioner since you raised the subject of resources, we know that fighting crime in this kind of society is not an easy thing and one can never rest. Do you think you have the resources to tackle the problems that exist??

Gerald Westby
?Well over the years in fairness we have been getting the resources. We have been providing, as I said we just got an intake of recruits and there is a public commitment from the Prime Minister himself where the numbers will gradually increase over the years. Also we are looking at trying to get some additional vehicle resources. One of the things we have recognized is that we cannot do it alone, so what we have been doing is reaching out to communities like the citizens and patrol programme where citizens come out and help us in preventative patrols. We have the special constables and also working with the youths because if we can work with the youths now probably it will help us with reducing crime down the road.?

Introduced at today’s ceremony was P.C. Alejandro Romero, a seven year veteran who will be one of the police officers permanently assigned to man the new police booth.
