Five new ambulances for Ministry of Health

Story PictureThis evening, the Ministry of Health took delivery of five fully equipped ambulances. The patient transportation vehicles were purchased under the Health Sector Reform Project through loan funds from the Inter-American Development Bank. According to Minister of Health, Joe Coye, the ambulances will be distributed to the northern, southern and western regional hospitals as well as the community hospitals in San Ignacio and Corozal. Coye says as services continue to improve, the general public must also do its part to address the many chronic health problems affecting Belizeans. That issue will be the focus of the five year health plan scheduled to be launched next month.

Joe Coye, Minister of Health
?We?ll never be able, no country will be able to afford to deal with the chronic diseases. You know your heart attacks, your hypertension, your strokes, your asthma, your diabetes and your cancers, so we will never be able to afford to cope with that. The only way we can deal with it in a cost effective way is through the preventative strategy. So you will never be able to have enough curative intervention facilities to deal with it unless you begin to prevent it. You can prevent it at the primary level, you can prevent it at the secondary level and you can prevent it at the tertiary level, so we will continue to certainly provide for those levels of secondary and tertiary care but we cannot continue the way we are going. We have to put more resources into the preventive side.?

The five ambulances were purchased and equipped locally at a total cost of around four hundred seventy-seven thousand dollars.
