Guatemala dismantles Comision de Belice

The Guatemalan government dropped a major bombshell late on Thursday evening following recent statements by President Otto Perez Molina in respect of the October sixth referendum. The government has moved decisively to dissolve the main agency in charge of monitoring matters relating to the unfounded claim against Belize. While the reports spread like wildfire in the press, the announcement was posted today on the Foreign Ministry’s website. The government said  it had decided to dissolve the Comision de Belice, known as the COMBEL, for neglecting  to warn the government that Belize  had tightened the requirements for the October sixth Referendum. On January twenty ninth, President Otto Perez Molina instructed Foreign Minister Fernando Carrera to investigate the circumstances as to why the advisory body failed to alert the government of the legal change to Belize’s Referendum Act which now requires sixty percent of electors to vote to give the poll validity.  COMBEL was comprised of prestigious lawyers in international law, considered hard liners in the claim to Belizean territory. In making the announcement at a press conference, Carrera discussed his findings and decried that Belize should have communicated to Guatemala and the Organization of American States (OAS), the amendment to the law. Belize, according to Carrera, had not acted in good faith and had only casually shared the information with Guatemala until 2011. The Special Agreement was signed in December 2008. Along with COMBEL, the Ministry also blamed the lack of information on  the Embassy of Guatemala in Belize saying, “The government agencies in charge of following up on the case with Belize and the territorial dispute were not able to adequately warn the country about the change in legislation in 2008, which shows carelessness in their responsibilities.” Cabreras also announced that administrative measures will be taken in respect of its Embassy in Belize the Foreign Minister announced the creation of a high-level advisory group composed of ministers and policy advisers while a legal strategy will be defined by experts in diverse fields. The Foreign Minister also said that Guatemala will proceed with the referendum. There has been no comment locally about impact if any this major development may have on the referendum.  For a full text of the Guatemalan statement click to

More crude bullying by the Guats. We can only lose at the ICJ, and we will never win with the Guats — it’s in their DNA to steal the Jewel, by ICJ if they can, maybe by illegal immigration, or someday by force. Remember, we have tens of thousands of Guat loyalists living among us.

We might be in for a bumpy ride, and need to deploy BDF patrols all along the border for the present.

    Agree or disagree?

Unite, stand your ground, make your voice be heard, “Belize da fu Belizeans”
I strongly believe that The President of Guatemala, is very arrogant , stupid, and a fool.
Belize will never be part of Guatemala, as much as I love the people, who are good neighbors.
What he is doing is wasting money, wasting money that could benefit the poor.

” I got to give credit to the David Cameron PM of the UK, when he told the Argentinian President that the Falkland island were not open for discussion, that is a leader, for his people.”

Like wise the the UK will never let our jewel be part of any other than what it is today
we have global support people. Belize will always be for Belizeans,
Look at the face of your Passport “Belize CARIBBEAN COMMUNITY, that IS HOW IT WILL BE.

  6. Evaristo Avella says:

Guatemala is an independent country just like our dear Belize. They can do as they please, and we shall do as we please. And we Belizeans could care very little what they do. Long live the Jewel!!!

  8. cdb says:

As far as I’m concern the Guatemalan Embassy should have been closed from the onset of this wreckless claim on our Belize, I can care less what Molina does, I’m more concern about what the Belizean people will do. I see Molina went to see the Pope, more like da Devil went to meet the Pope.

  9. Belizean Pride says:

if we read carefully this diplomats were sent not for diplomacy services but sounds more like spies to see what’s really going on in the Jewel and now it seems that they are being accused of failure to bring out that info top the guatemalan gov.

Are we Belizeans paying attention to this news carefully? So it seems that they a have spies like in the Jewel and we’re like shaking hands with them like fools. Should the gov. expel the guat ambassador for that spy intentions. If you read carefully what the guat press have stated in the link below, to me they are sent like spies, please read carefully and make note of it.

As far as I am concerned, they are just dead-fu-hungry idiots looking where else to satisfy their hunger and greed. Lef mi contri lone, eejats!

  12. orangewalkenio says:

cant believe the arrogance of these people…they feel we only have the referendum act for them…”we should have communicated with them? like WTF?

  13. ceo says:

I guess we should have made the percentage low enough so it was possible for them to take our land!

Whe there are votes this serious a supermajority vote should always be required: hell I say it should have been 75%!
