Did cop get amnesia during murder trial?

Anthony Polonio

The trial against a cop kicked off today in the Supreme Court before Justice Troadio Gonzalez. Police Constable Anthony Polonio is accused of perjury during the trial for the murder of Shawn Copius in October 2007. The accused killer in that case was well-known businessman, Chayben BouNahra, who was freed of the charges. But Polonio, along with two other officers Clement Cacho and Darius Ramos, developed a case of amnesia during the trial. It is now six years later and Polonio is now appearing before a jury of nine persons who will determine whether the cop was truthful or not. Polonio, who at the time was stationed at the CIB office in Belize City, responded to the scene of Copius’ murder. It is believed that while giving testimony under oath in the case of the Crown versus BouNahra, he intentionally tried to obstruct justice when he contradicted a statement recorded less than twenty-four hours before the trial and then told the court that he could not identify BouNahra. Prosecutor Leeroy Banner, called several witnesses to the stand including Tracey Sosa who was the then crown counsel for the DPP’s office that prosecuted the BouNahra case.  The trial was adjourned this afternoon to continue next week.

The Romans had a law that if a prisoner escaped, the policeman guarding him had to serve the escapee’s prison sentence. That’s a good principle to apply here — let this dirty cop go to prison for life.

As Voltaire wrote, “Sometimes it’s necessary to hang an Admiral to encourage the others.” This one deserves hanging. Of course, so did Chayben — he escaped conviction, but not death.
