Priest walks the entire country for peace

There was a celebration at St. Martin de Porres Primary School in Belize City this afternoon. The student body gathered in front of the primary school on Partridge Street awaiting their Pastor Father Matt Ruhl. The Jesuit priest returned to a hero’s welcome as he set out thirteen days ago to march for peace. His journey took him across the country. But during his trek, the cuts and bruises on the bottom of his feet became infected and he had to complete his journey in a vehicle. News Five was in front of the school along with the students as they cheered for their beloved Father Matt.

“It was just lovely. I want you to know that Belize is filled with beautiful people. Belize is more beautiful than a lot of Belizeans know.”

Jose Sanchez

“How do you feel to have all the students out here from St. Martin De Porres cheering your name?”

Father Matthew Ruhl S.J.

“I love it; they gladden my heart. I love my St. Martin De Porres students.”

“Father, who were some of the communities that came along and supported you?”

“From up to—from Corozal to Orange Walk to P.G. to Independence, to several villages along the way: St. Margaret’s, Armenia. Through the whole country there were all sorts of supports all the way down in Crique Sarco.”

“So people didn’t look at you and feel that you were strained to be walking along; they actually supported you?”

Father Matthew Ruhl S.J.

“There were all kinds of banners, all kinds of children: there was Maya, Garifuna, Chinese; all kinds of people. “

Father Matthew Ruhl S.J.

“To remember that we are all dust and to dust we will return. Though while we are not dust, let’s look do everything we can to make peace in our lives and that’s what theis walk was all about—making peace while we’ve got the strength and the time on this earth to do that.”

Jose Sanchez

“So you think you accomplished what you set out to do?”

Father Matthew Ruhl S.J.

“I think we accomplished that and a whole lot more.”

    Great concept, great job, Father!

I like that he says that Belize is more beautiful than Belizeans realize and that is so true, sadly we are not being tourist in our own country and so we miss out on appreciating its beauty and the warmth of its people. if we did i am sure we would fight even more passionately to protect it and would do more to make it a haven to live in. In my youth through the Girl Guides I got to travel around and see so much but now parents have to worry about sending their kids on these trips because of fear of child molestation.

The padre is right about the beauty of our country, that’s why it was named the Jewel of the Caribbean. Maybe if our people traveled more throughout the nation, we would appreciate it more, and do a better job about protecting it in every way.

Congratulations to all the members of St. Martin’s Parish especially Tanya Usher who was the main organizer. You walked the walk of peace!
