Consultations deflate at B.N.T.U. meetings; P.M. waits

Dean Barrow

The government proposal would allow public officers and teachers to receive salary adjustments from 2014 to 2017, but the adjustments would only be implemented if the government has a surplus of revenues in the years to come. The union leaders have had consultations with several district branches, but some who have shown up to the meetings have not seemed impressed with the deal because of all the “ifs” involved.  News Five asked the Prime Minister for his reaction.

Jose Sanchez

“Regarding the N.T.U.C.B. and B.N.T.U. consultations—at least in three of the sessions: Orange Walk, Belize City and P.G.—the turnout has been poor. And it seems that the teachers, the few who attended, were not in approval of the negotiations between the negotiating team and them.”

Prime Minister Dean Barrow

“I will wait for something official. I don’t know about what you are saying so let me, I think, refrain from making any comment until the union leaders speak to me officially.”

Jose Sanchez

“The chorus has been, however, too many ‘ifs;’ that has been like the chorus of the three meetings. Too many ‘ifs’—it all depends on future earnings which we are not necessarily sure whether we will be getting.”

Dean Barrow

“That is exactly and completely and entirely the essence of the proposal indeed.”

Tonight, the consultations will be held for Orange Walk District public officers and teachers.
