James Adderley and sporting highlights

Good evening, I’m James Adderley and this is Sports Monday.

The turmoil inside the cycling community spilled on to the streets of Belize City as riders rallied against the continuing impasse between President Emil Moreno who is seeking a second term and the majority of the BCA members who are vehemently opposed to his continued leadership. Cyclists and other interested parties from all over the nation came to express their opposition to the continued leadership of the beleaguered president. These athletes are signing a petition to force President Moreno out.

“The last communication we understand was saying that UCI would be coming sometime after February tenth to sort out things. My point is why wait for UCI to come to sort out cycling matters when we already know where they stand. They are saying that they support Mister Moreno; that they recognize Moreno. The government of Belize, to the best of my understand, is saying that if this happens and there is an election by a federation that the sport council does not recognize, the government will not recognize that particular president and go by the constitution that they recognize which si the one that says that the general membership should vote. I am saying why wait any longer? Let’s have the election today. We could have the elections tomorrow. We are going to wait—they haven’t given us a date as yet; only after February tenth—and then we wait for them to come and tell us what we already know.”

“I got into sports three years ago because of my son and some other junior cyclists that wanted to get into the sports; that loved the sport. When I joined the sport, there were over forty junior riders. The last race, there were only fifteen riders. This clearly shows the lack of leadership and we are out here today because we want something done.”

Marinette Flowers, Female Cyclist

“When I came out as a cyclist, it was much better. Now as a grandmother, I see the sport instead of developing, it is going backward. So I am out here rallying for the younger youths and for something better to come in the sport of cycling.”

Leticia Westby, a former member of the Moreno-led executive, has jumped ship people.”

“What we notice now is that they are more a bigger organization that the BCA today. They have major sponsorship where during this time; the Cycling Association lost its credibility. We are losing in terms of sponsorship—people are not sponsoring. Funding that we are expecting, we are not getting. Whenever there is a sponsorship, it is basically having races for athletes at about five hundred dollars; females are getting about one hundred dollars to compete in a race when they have invested so much in competition. During these four years the credibility of the BCA has fallen from sponsors and also our athletes.”

Even a current minister of government, who is a cycling enthusiast, spoke out.

“Cycling in Belize is going down under the present administration that we have. So cyclists out ya basically know how I feel and basically Mister Moreno noh have love fi cycling. If he had love for cycling, he would have listened to the cyclists which have majority of the participants who are out here. We need a change and as soon as my colleague from the Minister of Sports can get together, I believe that something good will come for cycling in Belize once again.”

In the meantime, the president of COPACI, Jose Manuel Peleaz Rodriguez is in Belize today on a mission to settle this particular boiling dispute.

In other cycling news, Geoggrey Waight of Cayo Rentals won the Weekend Warriors race from mile 21 to Busman Arnold on the George Price Highway beating out Barney Brown and Warren Coye to take the A Class. In the B class, Jim Scott of Santino’s took top honors beating out Daniel Cano and Dean Boyce in that order. While Wolrick Thurton of Truckers took the male C class.

Turning to football news, the Premier League opened its second semi-pro football season over the weekend, but before we go to that, here is league president Omario Perdomo handing the $15,000 prize money to Honorable John Saldivar sponsor of the 2012 Champion, Belmopan Bandits. And we say congratulations again.  Meanwhile folks, the bandits opened the new season against Verdes Saturday night inside the Isidoro Beaton Stadium and indeed we’re in the 1st minute of play when Brandon Peyrefitte beats his man right side to find Dennis Serano whose attempt bounces off goalkeeper William Luna to Jeremy James who makes it a 1-zip ballgame real early. Around the 15th minute, the Bandits has established its dominance when David Trapp launches this floaters that inches over the crossbar. We’re at the 19th minute when David Madrid receives this pass from Dennis Serano to make it a 2-zip Belmopan lead. Make it 3-nil at the 33rd minute when Brandon Peyrefitte outruns the Verdes defense to force one past Williams Luna as the bandits continue to roll. Now here’s a mental error by defenseman, Ian Gaynair, when he goes back to his keeper William Johnson inside the box to give Verdes a chance at pulling one back. The touch goes to Rodney Torres who fires but the extensive Belmopan wall does its job.

Folks, like the $15,000 cheque, this one is all Belmopan because at the 69th minute, Brandon deals to David trap who finds Jeremy James and he scores his 2nd goal of the match to make it a 4-zip big Win for the Belmopan bandits in their season opener. In other action around the league, Police United put Placencia Assassins in check with a 3-1 blast. The B.D.F. edged San Ignacio United 3-2 and San Felipe Barcelona blanked FC Belize 2-zip.

Looking to the weekend, we find 3 Saturday matches on the schedule all beginning at 7:30 p.m. Verdes will host San Ignacio at the Marshalleck; Police clashes with FC Belize at the MCC and Belmopan will again be at home this time against a tough San Felipe. On Sunday, the B.D.F. will make a stand at the Norman Broaster against Placencia.

Jah over all I’m James Adderley.
