Fire at Youth Cadet Corps guts building

A fire broke out on Thursday night at the National Youth Cadet Service Corp Compound at mile twenty-one on the George Price Highway. No one was injured, but an entire building was reduced to rubble. Early investigations point to a disturbing sign that the fire was deliberately set. News Five’s Duane Moody reports.

A wooden structure once stood here on the compound of the National Youth Cadet Service Corp. But disaster struck just around seven Thursday night and the building was gutted by a blaze. Whether deliberate or not, is still under investigation, but all that’s left is the charred and still smoking rubble. Operations Officer of the National Fire Service, Benisford Matura, says that firefighters in the city were dispatched just after seven; and upon reaching the scene, the entire building already destroyed.

“One of our fire tenders was dispatched to the location. It is twenty-one miles away so it took some time to reach. Upon arrival the structure was already gutted by fire. It was a sixteen by sixteen wooden structure; it serves as a store room for the cadet corp.”

Manager at the Cadet Corp, William Swan, says that he was travelling from Punta Gorda when he was alerted of the fire. The loss has been tremendous as the building was worth over ten thousand dollars.

“Coming back from Punta Gorda of a tour with the Youth Department in P.G. I had one of my night staff call me and tell me that the building that we used for the store room was under fire.”

The building was only used for storage and according to fire officials, their preliminary investigation show that the fire was deliberate.

“Investigations are still ongoing, but we are leaning towards an incendiary fire meaning that someone probably set the building on fire.”

And the Cadet Corp supports that angle. Swan says that two young men, who are residents from the Gracie Rock Village – and not with the cadet corp – were spotted fleeing from the compound. He has passed on this information to Hattieville police who are securing statements from the eyewitnesses.

“While I returned to the camp site here, I did a small investigation with some of the cadet, they said they were out in the back using the bathroom and they heard some noise in the storeroom. They tried to find out who it was but they were a bit scared so they came back and they went to the dorm. One of the night officers said he was walking from the kitchen because they had some cadets in the kitchen doing chores. When he was coming he saw flames from the storeroom. He hollered the storeroom in under fire. Some of the cadets came out and they saw two young men running towards the back of the compound heading towards the village. Some of the cadets allege saying that they know who the person is.”

According to Swan, young men from the village want to take over the basketball court on the Cadet Corp compound. He says that while luckily no one was hurt in the inferno, security measures will be boosted to ensure the safety of the over sixty cadets.

“We have security, we have watchman and I’ll just try to see how the watchman can be more vigilant and doing their prowl and checking on the compound in the night time; especially in the back part of the compound. We are working on our fence with the same young men; they are doing that as part of their project to get the fence up and secure the compound more safer so that people can’t come in the compound at night time.”

If the fire was deliberately set, it’s important to put the arsonists in prison. That’s for the protection of all the people. Never turn the other cheek for criminals, because they will just go victimize more people.
