Venezuela honors the Mission Miracle helpers

Mission Miracle is the Venezuelan humanitarian program that started back in 2010; some seven hundred and nine persons have received eye surgeries, free of cost, under the program which extends to eleven other countries of the region. Today, the Venezuelan Embassy held a luncheon at the Biltmore Plaza to honor coordinators and mayors from the various municipalities, who have collaborated in mission miracle. Charge D’Affaires at the Embassy, Gabriel Sanchez, says that the Embassy intends to make the event a tradition.

“Basically mission miracle works this way. The patient is selected by the Venezuelan doctors. The Venezuelan doctors come here every once in a while and they do screening. After they get the screening and are selected, they go to Venezuela for ten to fifteen days. While they are in Venezuela, everything related to lodging, food, medication and the operation and also the traveling; it is a private special plane that President Chavez sends from Venezuela to go over there. They are fully covered by the government of Venezuela.  They can go to the upcoming trainings to do checkups and if they need to go back to Venezuela, they can go. It’s an event that we are trying to make it a tradition. It started in 2011 and it is basically to honor all the people who contributed and it is basically to pay homage to the people. So we are going to show some information on specific data, number, figures, about how Mission Miracle has impacted Belize. And after that, the mayors who have helped most to those Belizean people will receive some plaques and also the coordinators will receive certificates of appreciation and this pin that you see over here as a token or demonstration that they have supported us.”

Sanchez says that several projects are in the pipeline to further strengthen the bond between both countries.

I’m no fan of the Chavez government, but I thank the people of Venezuela for the help they give to our fellow Belizeans who need this medical help.
