Foreign Affairs C.E.O. supports diplomatic protest

Alexis Rosado

Late this evening, News Five spoke to the C.E.O. of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Alexis Rosado. Rosado said that he was aware of the incident at the OAS headquarters in Washington D.C. He told News Five via phone that he fully supported the protest lodged by Ambassador Nestor Mendez.

Jose Sanchez

“Despite the protest made by Ambassador Mendez, he’s essentially ignored the topic; no one ever continued his point of order, no one raised their objections; the OAS representative continued by talking about his trip to Guatemala. It seems like acceptance.”

“Absolutely not, absolutely not. It cannot be acceptance. He had registered his point and they went ahead. I understand the Guatemalan delegate took a different view. But that does not mean that others accepted it. Absolutely not; that’s not how things work.”

Jose Sanchez

“Is there any other country that you are aware that after the meeting shared similar viewpoints with our Belizean ambassador?”

Via Phone: Alexis Rosado

“What will apply is that these things not done openly and vociferously. In the case, these delegates were there to discuss a certain matter and they don’t just act on knee jerk reactions. They will go back and consult and report; consult with their headquarters and get instructions. That’s what diplomats do; they don’t act on their own when they are out there. So one would not expect that they would immediately jump on the subject.”

Jose Sanchez

“But we must appreciate the Belizean public has a very strong emotional response to situations like these even when the name of the country is misspelled. So you must appreciate that they would take great offense to this incident occurring a second time. Is there any strong message coming from ministry?”

Via Phone: Alexis Rosado

“It is a view that is shared by all of us. You are not telling me anything new. We all share the same view; we are all offended by it and we have, I think I have been on the same page forever that rejecting any Guatemalan contention that they have a claim on our territory.”
