Courts and K.H.M.H. get a good deal

Aside from cutting edge technology recently donated to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, expecting mothers can now look forward to delivering newborns in modernized maternity units. The nation’s referral hospital today showed off spiffy new units that were renovated with the assistance of Courts Belize. Duane Moody reports.

Expectant mothers who are admitted at the K.H.M.H. will now be able to enjoy the comfort of air-conditioned private rooms complete with sofa, flat screen TV and other amenities. The maternity ward of the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital today officially inaugurated the opening of the rooms. The renovation comes as part of the Adopt a Ward Program of the K.H.M.H. that many corporate citizens are partnering with.

“For the last two years of so, we approach corporate citizens, organizations, individuals who have the resources and we ask for help with the upgrading program for the hospital. So it could be that you assist us in with repairing a part of the hospital, with repainting, or buying stuff that we need for the different areas of the hospital whether it be appliances, furniture, etc. and we approached courts; first of all because courts has such nice stuff and they had just about everything that we needed. So we said they are the obvious people to approach for this particular project.”

Some eight thousand dollars worth of items were donated courtesy of Courts Belize. Marketing Officer, Kovenka Rodriguez, says that the company took on the event wholesale in December and saw the project to fruition.

“We were approached by K.H.M.H.’s Brenda Stuart and Doctor Longsworth in joining with them to donate two private ward items. We were happy to do this donation because this was one of our projects in line to help healthcare systems in Belize. And with that said we did the donations of about eight thousand dollars and we made it to the Karl Heusner Hospital.  We provided two sofa beds, two TCL TVs and two refrigerators as well as two ACs. So that is a very big donation from Courts Belize and we are happy to be proudly sponsoring this.”

C.E.O. at the Hospital, Dr. Gary Longsworth, says that the enhancement will further improve services at the public medical facility.

“It is really part of a larger initiative and in this case, doing over the rooms, will allow us to remove private care from our ICU unit and do a major renovation of that unit for this year. So it might look like it is going to benefit a few people, but in fact it is going to benefit a much larger number of people with severe problems when they come into our ICU later on in the year.”

The renovations will free up the Intensive Care Unit where patients were previously admitted for delivery.
