Caye Caulker business’ license up in smoke

Rose’s Grill and Bar is one of the most sought after restaurants in Caye Caulker. It has won a major European award and after more than a decade in business, the chances are that most visitors to the island will drop by for a taste of the local grilled cuisine. At the end of January, whether or not it is political as its owner, Edwardo Arceo claims, Rose’s liquor license was not renewed. For a restaurant and bar, operating in a prime tourist destination, that is like having a birthday party without a cake. With the tourism season in full swing, Arceo says customers are staying away in numbers and the dip in business is threatening his livelihood.

Edwardo Arceo

“Well I can say my business had really going bad because they denied my license because I depend on tourists and most tourist are here to have fun and they will first order drinks and have maybe two, four drinks before lunch or dinner; and this really is affecting my business but I can say that maybe forty, fifty percent is affecting my business. So I am losing business because of this situation On a daily basis, and getting customers that are walking in and are walking out because there is no liquor, there is no beer and they want a cold beer or a glass of wine or a blended drink and there is no options more than juices, water or sodas and that’s really affecting my business.”

The village council says that the liquor license was not renewed because of complaints that the grill was billowing smoke to residents. Neighbors and the B.T.I.A. are supporting the local entrepreneur, but until cooler heads prevail, Arceo is losing customers and the visitors are deprived of a local hangout for authentic food.

I don’t believe the regulations for liquor licenses include complaints for smoke blowing. This sounds suspicious to me — undoubtedly a politician’s personal reason to destroy a successful competitor or rival. Power corrupts, and corrupt politicians should be impeached or recalled.

This case needs intense public scrutiny to cut through the smoke.

Give the man his License…politics play can be very vindictive and victimizing to innocent people…i seen it first hand…What does a liquor license have to do with food or a grill for that matter?? they only want to see this man and his business go down the toilets…the 3 things people crave more than anything in this world are: Money, Power & Respect… if going into politics give u all three then u can definately see why some people get so tempted and opt to run for politics…dont let them fool u and tell u they are in politics for the people…thats bulls*$%!!!…its all party politics..they are jus using the liquor license as a way to punish the guy and his business…i would sue if i was him…get me a nice big shot lawyer(Belize has too many) and sue them for prejudice and wrongful denial of a liquor license…

  3. Disgusted at Caye Caulker authorities. says:

There are several other REAL CASES of major liquor license violations on the island. Where is the liquor board chairman. Why is he hiding. Is the village council chairman the liquor board chairman. The island authorities are LYING because they don’t listen to complaints of neighbors of real violators. There is more to this story and they should answer to this. The authorities on the island don’t worry about laws, they make decisions based on their opinion and preference. My advice to Arceo, sue the HELL out of them.

  4. Ricky Malthus says:

The UDP liquor licensing board is drunk on stupidity and malice. Why would the members want to destroy a business and a person’s livelihood? When we read this dark age stupid action, we have to be ashamed of ourselves as a nation. We decry this action of the UDP liquor board . We hope the Amandala, the Reporter, the Belize Times come out speedily to denounce this behaviour. This license denial throw us back to slavery days.

MOVE YOUR GRILL!!!! If i were his neighbour..i would get tired of inhaling his smoke every single day. Since when does one business over rule an entire neighbourhood. I applaud the licour board for finally having the balls to say NO!!!! Here in San Pedro restaurants are getting into the habit of building bar areas inside and outside thier restaurants and then they get angry when the licour board stops them. They built these bars without permission from the building authority and think that because it was built now they HAVE to get the licence. Congrats to both the licour board is San Pedro and Caye Caulker..and continue to say NO to those who violate the law….
