Mother is still recovering after losing toddler in fire

The tragic death of three year old Danely Cabrera in a house fire in San Narciso Village, Corozal, has left her family filled with grief.  The fire started at about four o’clock on Monday morning and quickly gutted the family’s house. The family woes are compounded because the mother, Ramona Cabrera, was also injured in the inferno and remains hospitalized at the Corozal Community Hospital. News Five spoke to Ramona’s sister, Avelina, who told us that Ramona was not improving and has not spoken since the fire nor has she been able to retain any food. Ramona’s arms, back and chest were scorched while attempting to remove a mattress in order to stop the fire from spreading.  While she is receiving treatment for first and second degree burns, the family prepares to lay the toddler’s remains to rest.  Avelina explains what happened during that tragic morning.

“From what she told me is that she was sleeping with the baby next to her when she felt the fire on her arm. She quickly got up and took the baby off the bed and told her to go outside, but the baby, I believe she was scared instead went and hid under the crib. She tried to pull the mattress and got burnt. The hose from the gas tank that was in the house got loose and began to leak gas and that is when the fire got worse and it forced her out of the house. When she got out she noticed that the baby never came out but by this time it was too late. When the neighbors came out it was already too late to save the baby since the walls of the house were made of zinc it was too hot for anyone to go in.”

Ramona is the mother of four other children.

How many more Belizean children live in similar conditions, with fire hazards all around them? Yesterday’s report said the house was lit by candles, which is a disgrace in the 21st century, even for little Belize.

I’d like to see the fire department, or maybe BDF, have teams go to all of the poorest houses to see if they can be made safer by simple efforts. If they save one child, it would be worth it. I’m sure many of our parents are simply ignorant of how to eliminate deadly dangers.

I just wonder whether any leader in GOB has the energy to do something so sensible and proactive.
