How did Canadian national die in police custody?

The Canadian press has been reporting extensively on the demise of Jeffrey Furgala who died at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital on Monday night. Furgala was hospitalized for less than twenty-four hours after he was found unconscious inside a cell at the police at the San Ignacio Station. The thirty-five year old resident of Calgary, Canada, was taken into custody by the police reportedly in an intoxicated state. The police claim that Furgala fell in the holding cell and hit his head. But the cause of his death is suspicious and a criminal and an internal investigation is ongoing. The results of a postmortem are pending to determine the cause of death. Furgala’s family who are in Belize did not wish to comment nor did the Canadian Consulate. CBC Canada has been following this story and here is a report.

Please if I am drunk allow me to sleep in the park, don’t do me any favors by taking me into a police station holding cell.

@sickntired is correct. Not only that but many of my friends have stopped coming to Belize, and Mexico as well, because of all the bad publicity. I don’t think the GOB or the Police have grasped the power of the internet yet. Canadians won’t complain much, they’ll just go somewhere else, which is why Cuba’s tourist industry is booming. Cuba is one of the safest countries in the region and right now is FULL of Canadian and European tourists. If Belize wants to keep it’s tourism industry healthy, these kinds of incidents must stop.
This man was taken into custody by the police and in their care and control and therefore they had a responsibility for his well being, whether he was drunk or not.

This country has deteriorated dramatically under the UDP government . The police are brutal and corrupt . Murders, abuse against children and women is rampant, with no obvious government intervention. Added to this , is the resentment towards Canadians, regardless of how much Canadians have given to this small country. It isn’t safe there …………for anyone . Another example of the need for gun control. The residents pay high costs for gas , utilities, and are generally rather poor except for those pulling all the strings. Compounding this ,we have Canadians owning land ,working without permits seemingly , making money while the locals are poor. The resentment is growing. ,fair or not.
