B.D.F. and Police officer rumble

Tyrone Cox

The Belize Police Department and the Belize Defense Force – they’re forced to work together in close quarters and on a daily basis as part of the anti-crime initiatives in place since last year. But it’s no secret that the two branches of government’s law enforcement and national security arm do not always see eye to eye.  Today B.D.F. Corporal Tyrone Cox visited our studios to tell us about an altercation he had on Tuesday with a Police officer which turned physical. He claims that he was off duty and in civilian clothing, but that he identified himself repeatedly when approached by the Policeman as he rode his bicycle to the store near his home at about six-thirty that evening. Here’s his story.

Cpl. Tyrone Cox, B.D.F.

“One of them pass me already and the next one brakes. When he brakes I brakes in front of him. I put down one of my foot and keep my two hand on the bike. He put down ih foot and hold the brakes handle for the cycle. He then tell me put yo hand pan mi head and come off the bike. I tell ahn sir by all due respect, I am a member of the Belize Defense Force. Ih say put yo hand pan yo head. I tell ahn sir, I am a corporal, I am a member of the B.D.F. So I say I know the man as a chancy man cause I see ahn ina three actions with my two eye. So when he tell me that, my intention was come off the bike and put the bike pan di ground. so I see he start approach me. so when he approach me, I tell ahn, sir with all due respect, I woulda like yo fi ker mi to the nearest police precinct to conduct your search because I dah wah member of the B.D.F. like how I tell yo earlier. All of a sudden, I feel wah slap across the right side of my face from fi he left hand. I gone kinda blankage – neva did drop, but gone kinda blankage – not knowing at the point of time when my hand gone pan top of my head. When my hand reach top of my head and when I wake up to realize that he is conducting his search, he di give me like five to six condom back ina my hand, my phone, my house keys and about twenty-five to thirty dollars ina finance. And after that I push it down ina my pocket and I spin around slow. I remember at one point at time, he said ih noh care, but I noh remember at which point ah di speech weh me and he mi had ih tell me. I rember turning around slow, ih mi got wah next police known as Trapp—a short dude, dark skinned known as Trapp—he mi look spooked ina ih face like the police neva shoulda mi do that. From the beginning to end, he noh touch me, he noh say nothing, nothing. All he do dah pull out wah pen and wah paper and asked me the same question weh yo live. I give ahn mi address, 6618 Police Street. Weh yo name? Tyrone Cox, Corporal. What dah yo job? I tell ahn B.D.F. And like when he realize that I dah wah soldier fi real now, he get the picture, he gone quite. Ih noh know weh fi do. That was it—no A no B. It get pan ih cycle and turn the opposite direction from weh dehn gwen.”

Corporal Cox has reported the incident to the Police Department and provided a description of the officer who hit him. He sustained an injury to his eye which has resulted in him having to serve limited duties with the B.D.F. Today News Five contacted Corporal Hernandez at the Police Internal Affairs Office where we were informed that the matter is currently under investigation. Corporal Cox has served for seven years with the B.D.F.

Its a tragedy what happen to the officer an we’ve been reading news about police abuse and over using their power alot, when did we lost our respect to another human being? Belizean has lost their way as a nation. Why is it that every time we watch d news around d world, its black people bringing down each other.sad….very sad. Belize Police and B.D.F Officer need to carry identification card as an officer.

just imagine these cops not even respect a soldier who is the backbone of our country, no way this cop belongs in the police force for another hour, he should be fired asap immedietely.

it is sad to hear about our security forces having some kind of difficulties with each other; and its also sad to knw of this type of abuses, on behalf of the Police officer and believe he must be delt with accordingly. What i do agree is in the police searching the BDF, remember that just like the Police department has corrupted personnel, likewise the BDF

Thanks to Cpl. Cox for reporting it. He sounds like an upright defender of the nation who has no tolerance for an abusive cop.

ComPol Whylie has a big job to weed out the incompetent, abusive, and corrupt police, but I hope he will do it ruthlessly. The country deserves better, a police department that really will protect and serve the people.

This is so bad! Most police officers in Belize do not have the necessary training or behavior to command the respect of the public. They neither serve of protect the public! Officers need to start carrying ID’s to prove who they say they are and the police need to approach the public with respect.

At least let them sit and watch a few eppisodes of Cops so they can see how to conduct themselves in public.
