Driver’s fatal crash into trailer across highway

Marcelo “Chelo” Riverol

A horrific accident occurred on the Philip Goldson Highway after nine o’clock on Wednesday night. A Corozal resident was killed instantly when his SUV crashed into a fifty-three foot trailer that was reversing from the highway into a feeder road in the village of Conception. Marcelo “Chelo” Riverol, was driving back to his house alone after work in the City, when he crashed into the trailer that was sprawling across the entire width of the highway. Riverol’s vehicle ended under the trailer and there are allegations the trailer’s driver may have been intoxicated. Duane Moody reports.

Marcelo Riverol Senior never made it to his house on Wednesday night. Between miles seventy-six and seventy-seven on the Phillip Goldson Highway in the village of Concepcion, Riverol Sr. slammed into a trailer truck blocking the entire width of the highway. His ford SUV was extensively damaged and ended under the trailer.  Riverol Sr. laid motionless as many villagers ran to the scene. The fifty-six year old was heading to Corozal Town around nine-twenty p.m. when the fatal accident happened.

Zeni Perdomo, Niece of Accident Victim
“He had gone for a meeting and after the meeting he had a late interview with a customer because he works with B.T.L. So we were coming and something that kept me a little calm was because I didn’t get any calls. but then my husband calls and tells me about the accident and tells me that it seems to be a green vehicle. When we got to Concepcion and I quickly got to where the vehicle was, there I met his son, he’s a doctor and he was coming off from his shift and driving home to Orange Walk and didn’t know that he would have met this tragedy and it would have been his dad. They had just taken the body to the morgue.”

His niece, Zeni Perdomo, a teacher, was returning to Corozal from the funeral of former B.N.T.U. President, John Pinelo, when she heard about the accident and that her uncle “Chelo” was mortally wounded. It sent shockwaves throughout her body as her uncle, she says, is known to be a careful driver.

Zeni Perdomo
“My uncle lost his mom in December, forty days ago and it is very tragic. Last night I was coming back from Mister Pinelo funeral when my son informed that he was no longer having to stay over at my aunt because my uncle was coming home last night. Usually when my uncle is not at home, my son is with my aunt. Five minutes after that a teacher coming with me in the same vehicle received a call that there was a traffic accident and at that point I was alerted and it was just something in my heart that it could be my uncle. Who knew my uncle Chelo—we called him Chelo—knew that they would have a laugh whenever they meet with him. He always entertains you. He was always joking around; always made you laugh. He’d give you jokes and involve you and he was a very cautious driver. Whenever you were driving and he was with us, he would always correct us if we do something that was wrong. He would always tell us, when we drive, we don’t only drive for ourselves; we drive for others because sometimes others can’t see what’s going to happen.”

Riverol Sr. was pronounced dead on arrival at the Corozal Community Hospital. Relatives and witnesses allege that the driver of the trailer was under the influence of alcohol and Corozal police have confirmed that twenty-seven year old Blas Alcoser, is in custody and faces possible charges of manslaughter by negligence, causing death by careless conduct and driving without due care and attention, among other charges.

Zeni Perdomo

“Knowing that this trailer with no reflectors was right across the highway. He had called my aunt at a little after nine; probably about ten to fifteen minutes before he actually got to that place. And he wasn’t speeding because he left Belize City at seven and this was after nine. And he was coming home from work. So it hurts me even more because this was a driver that people in Concepcion are telling us he was drunk…others are telling us that the man that was charged now is not the man that was actually driving because the driver was drunk.  I have faith that the police officers will conduct a thorough investigation and if there is a question that there is the wrong person they are charging that they will find out.  So we have lost a great man due to irresponsible; negligent drivers.”

A wake will be held tonight and Riverol Sr. will be laid to rest on Friday. Duane Moody for News Five.

  2. Corozo says:

    RIP Chelo
But I bet anything that he was texting and driving. It seems hard not to see this huge truck across the highway. Usually when there is oncoming traffic it is hard to see someone parked on the road, but there was no oncoming traffic to blind the victim.
He was also on the phone while driving which should be illegal because it distracts the driver. Here in Corozal we see the traffic officers riding their scooters and texting. What a bad example.
Talking on the phone or texting while driving is a dangerous as drinking and driving and must be stopped.

  3. Simone says:

    stupid truck and bus drivers

  4. Storm says:

Prayers for the man’s soul and his family.

Too early to know what happened, but I agree that using a cellphone in any way while driving should be prohibited.

And if the truck driver was driving intoxicated, he should be in prison for many years.

  5. family friend says:
