Sister City relationships with Guate who?

In October Belizeans will go to a referendum to decide if the nation will go to the ICJ to answer a claim by Guatemala. That claim is for roughly half of Belize. If you’re visualizing a map of the country right now, draw a line though Belmopan from one side to the next. Everything below the line is what Guatemala claims is theirs. Understandably, Belizeans are not exactly happy with our neighbours right about now. But that’s not phasing Mayor Darrell Bradley in the slightest. In fact, he just returned from leading a delegation to Guatemala where he and his colleagues were welcomed with open arms and treated with love. In the normal scheme of things these visits and the establishing of sister-city relationships is routine, but considering the current climate, it’s pretty interesting and, according to the Mayor, significant for that very reason.

Darrell Bradley, Belize City Mayor

Darrell Bradley

“I you would recall, the Mayor of San Benito had come to Belize in December of last year and I presented her with the keys to the City. And so this was an exchanged visit. After that, we went to Guatemala City and we spent two days in Guatemala City and we met several Members of Congress for Guatemala and then we went on to another city in southern Guatemala, Almolonga. And we met the mayor of Almolonga and he also presented me with the keys to the City of Almolonga together with the Mayor of San Benito. And what we mean to do is exchange formal relationships by way of a Sister City agreement with the City of San Benito. If you are familiar with that area, it is San Benito, Peten and Santa Elena. And this is an hour and a half from our border right near to Belize—it is closer than Chetumal. And so what we would want to do is establish trade relations with them and see how we could corporate in the areas of culture and sports and economic developments so that we can promote Belize and San Benito. There is a lot of assets around that area because Tikal is forty-five minutes away; we also have Caracol. So there was a lot of things that we were discussing that could promote economic development and job opportunities for both our cities. I think the greatest thing that we can do in relations to encouraging peace between the two countries is to see that there is exchange of ideas, of relationships, for trade, sports, culture and this could promote a greater ease in the tension between the two countries.”

Mayor Bradley says his intention is not to interfere or influence in any way the national discourse at government level, but just to foster closer relationships at a municipal level. He is doing the same with his counterparts in Chetumal, Quintana Roo.

Belize City mayor travels all the way from city to go across the border with out the other Mayors from Cayo, Belmopan or Benque. Loving the spot light I see, even negotiating better relationships for his country. Lose focus much ‘City Mayor’? Or just have money to spend?

  3. guate says:

Almolonga is not a city, a farming community outside Quetzaltenango, Guatemala’s second largest city.
