Another manatee fatality caused by mariner

The Sea to Shore alliance and the Coastal Zone Institute of Management and Authority have recorded its second manatee death for 2013. The adult mammal was initially rescued in Vista Del Mar in August 2012. With the help of BATSUB and the Belize Coastguard, two manatees were transported to a rehabilitation facility in Sarteneja, Corozal. According to Manatee Research Associate, Jamal Galves, despite the care for Rosie the manatee, she passed away.

“We saw the animal there and it seemed like it was trying to recover from the injury. We were monitoring it for a long time and realized that the animal wasn’t going to recover by itself. So we decided to pulling the animal in; take it to rehabilitation to see what we can do to improve its condition. To our surprise the animal did very, very well; her improvement was going very quickly. She was eating, moving around; picking up chunks of weight. So for her to have passed away so sudden, we were shock because we didn’t have any indication of any trouble throughout the whole time. But the necropsy has showed that the animal had died due to internal injury from a result of the water craft collision. She had a swollen liver, her kidney wasn’t well, her heart wasn’t well. Initially we had known she had a punctured lungs and it was inflated and she was moving around and moving as a normal manatee would. So we were quite shocked to the results of this.”

“Normally when you get these injured manatees, where do you take them for rehabilitation?”

“In Sarteneja; we have a very wonderful crew up there at wild tracks; a huge number of volunteers that come in. And they did a wonderful job on this animal I must say and we have to thank all the vets that had involvement in Rosy and everybody that had involvement in trying to see her recover noh.”

A workshop is being held next week to promote manatee safety.

I applaud these folks who try to protect our defenseless manatees and other wildlife. The animals always suffer when man encroaches into their domain.

  2. Michaela Fisher says:

Pass a law for propeller “cages”. They are easy to make, cheap, and will help prevent manatee deep injury deaths.
