Education Minister denied UB student government claims

Patrick Faber

Following that trip down memory lane, Minister Faber also spoke about a more recent incident at the national university, U.B. The University of Belize’s student government led a protest on Monday through the streets of Belmopan and it ended at the steps of the assembly building. Hope Amadi, the student government president, led about one hundred and fifty students on a campaign to reinstate the subsidy program for new students which was dropped by the education ministry. Patrick Faber dismissed many of the statements made by Hope Amadi and his organization called Nation Builders.

“In the letter of about two pages they also requested a meeting with me and I responded saying to them when my next available date for a meeting would be and I told them to contact my secretary, there has been no response to that letter. I am assuming that they never really intended to meet with me which is something we must point out as well. They have been all over the media saying that they are trying to reach me and trying to meet with me and that’s an absolute lie. They have also been claiming that I have said things from way back in the past and they can’t seem to produce any evidence of. What is the evidence, what is the fact is that UB’s subvention has been raised by six million dollars over the last four years, they have received four million dollars more and they have also received millions more in terms of the grants and the scholarships that have been given. And that in fact tertiary education in this country, UB and all the other junior colleges included do receive their fair share of the education pie; so that to spend anymore, continue the kind of reckless spending that was being done in terms of that fee subsidy cannot continue, and we cannot continue to be unfair with UB like that.”

According to the university, a call for a boycott of new registration did not materialize and in fact more new students registered this semester.

The students need to join a gang if they want money from the Government. This is the Government policy.
