One dead as SUV and bus collide on highway

Juvencio Serrano

Road traffic accidents are frequent on our highways and account for a significant percentage of deaths. But despite negative perception, serious accidents involving buses are not frequent. An accident early Saturday morning between a Tillett’s bus travelling from Belize City to Orange Walk and an SUV travelling in the opposite direction was particularly gruesome. One person was killed and reports from those on the scene say that considering the impact and the amount of passengers on the bus, it was nothing short of a miracle that there was only one fatality. Freelance journalist, Anita Nembhard, was a passenger on a Tillett’s bus; her intention to spend the weekend in Chetumal was smashed by the massive collision which occurred between miles thirty-one and thirty-two on the Phillip Goldson highway a little after seven. Nembhard says she fell asleep and was awakened by the impact. Nembhard spoke of the frightening experience.

“From inside of the bus I could have seen my husband next to me. Everything didn’t seem clear inside until I started hearing the voice of the conductor. And then I started seeing people trying to get out of their seats. I couldn’t see the driver…the driver just doesn’t seem to have been near. Until I got out, then I started seeing people panicking and you know, crying and trying to see where the person they were with was. And then I saw the conductor on the ground. Eventually I went to the front of the bus and I saw the driver who was still trapped in his seat. He was conscious and everything, bleeding a lot. And then everybody was trying to see how they could get him out.  First I was still a little disoriented and confused and I walked across the road and I stepped on something and I didn’t even realize I had stepped on a portion of the guy’s feet. And it was so moist and thing and somebody said Miss you just stepped on the dead guy and I was like okay. And then I looked a bit in front of me down the road and I saw the person body laying three-quarter of it out the vehicle on the roadside. And the other part inside. But the door was already off, mash up. It didn’t even look like a vehicle. It just looked like something hanging. Then I saw vehicles and a police woman who was on our bus had already come out to try and let oncoming traffic know that something had happened so that they could slow down.”

The driver of the maroon colored Toyota SUV sustained massive injuries and died on impact. He was identified as twenty-eight year old Juvencio Serrano Jr., a prison officer from Belize City. The driver of the bus, fifty-eight year old Carlos Herrera from San Jose in the Orange Walk district, was injured and was transported to the Northern Regional Hospital. Ten other persons on the bus received minor injuries and were treated and released from the K.H.M.H. Preliminary investigations show that the SUV lost control and veered into the path of the bus.

So sad, more useless tragedy. I hope a full investigation, including blood toxicology of both drivers, determines what happened.
