“To Sir with Love,” B.N.T.U.’s Pinelo passes away

John Pinelo

There is one face that won’t be at the N.T.U.C.B. protest in Belmopan. Former B.N.T.U. President, John Pinelo, had held the teachers union together for many years and led them through negotiations and protests with governments.  Pinelo was in the frontline with the B.N.T.U. in the 2010 demonstration. The long-serving union president passed away over the weekend. Both sitting presidents of the B.N.T.U. and the N.T.U.C.B. said earlier today that his presence will be missed.

“I want to pay homage to a great trade union leader that has passed over the weekend, John Pinelo. His most famous phrase that resonates with me is whenever we used to mobilize workers; he used to say, “You feel the power.” He used to always say that because he understood the power when membership comes together to go after a particular objective. I want to wish Brother Pinelo all the best and rest in peace Brother Pinelo.”

Luke Palacio, President, BNTU

“On my own behalf as President of the Belize National Teachers Union, our council of management and our national executive and the membership of B.N.T.U. takes this opportunity to extend our sympathies to the family of our former president; the person who served the longest as B.N.T.U. Notational President, Brother John Pinelo, who passed away on Saturday. He will be buried in San Ignacio on Wednesday. And again, we hope that he will now go to a resting place. I am certain that even if Brother John were very ill and would still be on his sick bed tomorrow when we demonstrate. He would say, “Demonstrate; carry on. Feel the Power and Fight for your Rights.”

Pinelo will be laid to rest this Wednesday. Funeral services will be held at the Sacred Heart Church in San Ignacio.

Belize has truly lost a great educator, community leader and champion of workers’ rights. Mr. Pinelo’s legacy will be one for the history books. Condolences to the family and may he rest in peace.
