480 students graduate from UB

The University of Belize’s sixteenth commencement exercise was held at the Central Campus in Belmopan on Saturday. Four hundred and eighty students graduated and of that amount three hundred and thirty, roughly sixty-eight percent, were females. The President of the University of Belize, Doctor Cary Fraser congratulated the graduates while the guest speaker and Director of the Caribbean Community Climate Change Center, Doctor Kenrick Leslie, gave the feature address.  In his presentation, Doctor Leslie spoke about the significance of climate change. The following video of the graduation which highlights the student with the highest Grade Point Average is provided courtesy of the government press office.

“Some may still deny the overwhelming judgment of science. But none can avoid the devastating impact of raging fires and crippling drought and more powerful storms. The path towards sustainable energy sources will be long and sometimes difficult, but America cannot resist this transition, we must lead. In this case Mister President, the University of Belize must take the lead in our country in addressing the issues of Climate Change as well. Students as you move on to other pursuits in life—whether continued academic achievements or entry into the world of work—you must ask yourself the question; “What does all of this mean to me?” I mean not only what you have received from the university over the past years, but also from the information that I have provided you today. And since we all know we cannot escape the clutches of climate change, your challenge to yourself must be, what will I do about it.”

cheyenne Usher got the highest GPA as well as the most outstanding student award and you did not show it.

First, thanks to the European Union for helping to produce more teachers that the Jewel desperately needs.

And congratulations to the graduates, you’ve successfully completed a major step on the road to success. That takes a dream and self-discipline, which are key qualities for success in any field. 40 more years of hard work, more or less, and you’ve got it made!

Climate change? I’m not sold that humans cause it, although in our arrogance we might like to believe we are that important. The history of Earth has had Ice Ages and thaws, flooding, warming freezing, and so on, since it began. Sensible steps to reduce pollution are wise, but not extreme ones that jeopardize progress and prosperity. Heaven knows that China and India pay no attention at all to reducing pollution, and until they take it seriously, nothing the rest of us can do will make much difference, anyway. But the “green movement” does provide a chance for its promoters to get rich with “carbon credits,” taxes, and other phony schemes!
