UB Student Government resists increased fees

The planned demonstration and possible strike are not the only issues facing the Ministry of Education. The Association of Student Governments of the University of Belize is resisting a cut in government subsidies to the university which means that registration fees for new students stand to go up. The association has written to Minister Faber to say that they were not consulted nor was consideration given to the high poverty rate, unemployment and cost of living. The association says they want government to re-instate the subsidies by January twenty-fourth and to meet with the Minister before then. Last Friday, the Minister said the decision on the subsidy stands and will not be re-visited.

College education isn’t a right, so when the cookie jar is empty, students must pay their own way. That isn’t too much to ask. Many of us did that, but it might mean getting a job and giving up fun & games. That’s educational, too.

Anything worth having is worth working for.

ok storm. if your not helping the cause better you zip it. i reckon you have have an education, cuase it doesnt seem so. i really dont think the belizean students and society should be paying such expensive fees for education and health care. they are the basic founding principles of any society . i really hope the students and belizean teachers and union stand their ground and until they get what they ask for. it is unfair and devastating to see our politicians squandering the belizean money with those expensive vehicles only to have their brothers crash them. those monies could definitely be put to better use. example look at the rose wood that so called minister alamilla burnt. how stupid is that.
come on belizeans revolution is closer than ever change is possible. united we are strong.
