Still in season – Flavors of Belize

Belizean publisher Tanya McNab, renowned for her bestselling cookbook Flavors of Belize, was recently featured in the international media where exposure for the publication was broadcasted to approximately ninety-seven million homes across America.  Tanya, a local culinary enthusiast, appeared on Daytime TV, a syndicated show hosted by Cyndi Edwards on WFLA News Channel 8 in Tampa, Florida.  Along with popular blogger Jaden Hair, also a television chef and columnist, McNab prepared Coconut Curry Shrimp, a delicacy found on Elvi’s Kitchen’s menu.  Here’s a short video clip of her appearance.

“Daytime TV is syndicated in over a hundred different markets. They cover over eighty-five percent of U.S. Television homes which equals to about ninety-seven million homes every day during the week. So it was a huge opportunity for us and it was aired on Friday at eleven a.m. eastern time. Every opportunity that we have similar to this or even others; it is an opportunity to market Belize. Belize is always first and it has become a project of pride for us to have created this product that people are so happy to have and are sharing all over the world. We chose the coconut curry shrimp which was submitted to us by the Chef of Elvi’s Kitchen in San Pedro. We chose this for a few reasons. One, we wanted a seafood dish; we thought that the coconut curry was quite appropriate for a Creole recipe and we always like to promote Belize as well as our cookbook. And we feel that by promoting the restaurants that have helped us on this process is also really important.”

“It is a fantastic opportunity. It is the right kind of exposure because it showcases Belize for the right reason. It speaks about what we have to offer not only as a destination because of our physical landscape, but also in terms of some of the cultural products and the food. They come for a variety of reasons and for Belize, I have to say that one of the major reasons that they are coming is because of our food.”

The show was filmed at the NBC News Center in Tampa.  Flavors of Belize highlights Belize’s diverse culinary experiences, as well as its many cultures.

Our melting pot culture from almost all over the world certainly has resulted in exciting dishes here, so I’m glad the States got a chance to have a glimpse at our little cuisine secrets.
