Paying gangs but why not educators?

Minister Faber was also asked about payment made to gangs, either for the truce or to keep the peace in the aftermath of the slaughter of four George Street Gang affiliates two weeks ago. Specifically, how is it that there are resources for gangs but not for public officers?  Here is his response.

Patrick Faber, Minister of Education

Patrick Faber

“Crime is an issue in this city, crime is an issue in the wider country as well and the issue of the prime minister, the government engaging with the gangs to try to gainfully employ them and to make sure they have an option as oppose to going out there and shooting and robbing people. I believe is something that, at least in the short term did work, in times of crises did work; and I hear people clamoring for an answer about whether or not recently the government paid any kind of money to the George street gang and so on, to get them to ease on the retaliation and so on. I’ll tell you as far I know that is not the case and the Prime Minister has gone on record to say that as well. That while there was a meeting to try to ask them, listen please don’t retaliate on this; there was no exchange of money and payment for them to do that and I think there is a lot confusion on that issue. I am able to say that quite comfortably because again the same reason why I can say to teachers, you can’t get a raise because we need to put more monies into the education system so that people at early childhood stage can get access it is the same reason I can say to them that we can’t give the raise because we have to invest more in healthcare it the same reason. That program aimed to alleviate a condition that affects the people of this country, more specifically in Belize City where the crime was high and there was a specific intention. The government didn’t just wake up one morning knock ih head when ih get off a bed and seh I wah give gang people money. There was a reason behind and while some people don’t agree with that. All can see that at least in the short there was a bit of ease, god knows what would have happened if that kind of intervention would not have happen at the time nobody can be certain but you can’t fault a government for trying to do whatever it needs to do in order to make a situation better and to safeguard things from going way down hill where we couldn’t pull it back.”

You put lipstick on a pig, it’s still a pig.

Appeasing gangsters is stupid beyond words. Hammer them into prison, don’t pay them and let them flaunt it on the streets. The solution to crime is pursuing the criminals until they are all in prison, dead, or fled.

What other government pays criminals? The policy is insane, so are its supporters. Enough said.

  2. Bear says:

Never negotiate with terrorists. That’s a sound national policy, and it applies to criminals, too.

When the US deviated from that policy in the 1980′s, they would ransom one set of hostages — and immediately the terrorists would capture some more, to earn more ransom. The pirates in Somalia do the same thing today.

Apparently our leaders are ignorant of history, and thus they repeat it.

  3. Rod says:

    @ Rod

I would love for u to rub shoulders with people of other caribbean countries, so u can live through what they do on a daily basis. So u can understand what it is to live everyday and night in their shoes suffering through a high crime rate , high taxes etc. Maybe then you would shut your mouth about your government. They are trying to remedy the problem left by your beloved previous government. Instead of complaining, educate yourself on the history of all your previous parties in government, learn to read and write and then contribute, At the moment you’re just spitting out garbage.

  7. Retired CEO says:

Very sadly so, this minister sounds pathetic, downright incompetent and a failure as a so-called leader. It sounds so assinine the least to say, that the government paid gangs to ease up on their violent criminal behavior, when we have a judicial system to deal with law breakers. I just can’t believe what I heard from this bufoon of a minister saying that the leader of our country begged the criminal elements of the society ” please don’t retaliate on this “, coupled with giving out jobs as a temporary measure, as opposed to them going out ” robbing and shooting people “. Fool di talk but ah hope da no fool di listen. Nowthen, I say to Faber, who in the hell does he think he is fooling? Who us running the affairs of the country? Gangs or the Cabinet of bufoons?

  8. hard working teacher says:

these morons still don’t get it. tell us how much money was spent on gang truce , give us the figure. how much did Boots give away, ( do you remember when Boots send the BDF to beat up them Spanish people and left them in the street, claiming he does not NEGOTIATE WITH CRIMINALS) tell us what is GOB telefone bill, per ministry, what is their fuel bill per department. how much contract officers and political operatives are on GOB payroll. show us these figures and we will show you how teachers can get their salary adjustments overdue for 12 YEARS.

  9. Gain says:

Poor answer Mr. Minister of Education, you are actually condoning the payment to gangs and their way of life. Honestly this was an excellent question. but the answer is not what Belizeans wanted to hear. Use resources and money to pay our public officers, police, or build up Belize’s infrastructure who know how much money has already been paid thus far to gangbangers. Think Belizeans, THINK! Things are getting rough and people are unhappy. Government have given preferential treatment to gangs, instead of protecting us the citizens and working class of Belize. Sad to see all this happening.

  10. b.Jones says:

Why no reporter ask Farber what was the end result of his brother crashing the People’s vehicle ? You’re talking about $80,000 gone just like that…smh…Ask the tough questions people. You should have also ask farber how much is his salary & the salary of his brother & other employees , compared to the teachers.

  11. Seletar says:

@Retired CEO, is there any difference between the gangs and the buffoons? Maybe just different sides of the same coin.

  12. MadDOG says:
